Behind the neck press - thoughts?

I recently incorporated this back into my shoulder workouts and I think they’re great but I keep hearing people say how bad they are and how the cause injuries. I think as long as you have mobility and smarts you should be fine.
Now, for decades this was a prominent movement but then it died off.
What do you think? Good or bad? Why?

I think they can be ok, but not sure what more they offer vs pressing in front or with dumbbells.
The further back your hands are, the tougher it is on shoulders. That said, if your mobility is there, it does not necessarily increase injury risk tremendously, IMO.
That said, why risk it?

I say Don’t do them. Flexing your neck forward while holding heavy weight just sounds like a stupid idea

Not a natural movement at all. Substitute with dumbbell Arnold presses annif that’s not enough load on your front delts then go really heavy on front arm raises and cheat the slightest bit. Cheating is never a great idea, but a way better long term solution to any barbell overhead presses.

Hard on RC. Doing them every now and then won’t hurt, but the repeated strain will eventually cause injury, similar to poor deadlift form.
Edit for CAN cause injury, not will cause injury. Some people can get away with it.

Agree with everyone here, do not do barbell behind the neck press.
Dumbbell and front barbell.

As long as you go light weight and focus strictly on form they can be useful. Prefer dumbbells my self. On the other hand I love behind the neck lat pulls. They just feel good to me although not a natural movement.

There was a new study I saw on the gram the other day that showed BTN press showed no extra muscle activity over front press or db press.
With that said I do them as a variant, but I have great shoulder mobility from years of concentrating on it.oat people don't and it puts your rotator cuff in a bad position if you don't have great mobility. Same with the neck.
TLDR: if you have great mobility, they are fine but not superior in any way. If not, DON'T DO THEM.

Honestly, with every lift I do there is a certain risk/reward assessment that is done. I can tell you there isn't much reason to go behind your neck EVER. The benefit just isn't there to warrant the extra stress on the joints.

Do not do them behind the neck. It puts the shoulder in external rotation. When you add weight while the shoulder is in external rotation it’s not very good for the shoulder capsule.
