At what age would you advocate taking TRT even if it's not necessarily needed? (Longevity)

Here is a picture of Ernie Hudson taken at 78 years old:

I get that a lot of it is genetics, consistency with health, diet, and fitness, and luck.

However, there are certainly some enhancements going on to maintain that kind of physique into his late 70s.

So if I wanted to optimize my longevity, when is the right time to start TRT? My doctor says it's not needed even though my total test is in the low to mid 300s because I don't have symptoms of low testosterone.

Then don't get on it. Sounds like a lot of people are worried about the number associated with it. If you feel good, and don't have any symptoms, don't start it.

Was traveling recently with family and saw my FILs large pill box. For people on TRT, it is part of their "weekly pill box" that they will likely need for the rest of their lives.

To answer your question directly, for longevity, I believe there are numerous lifestyle/health choices not involving TRT I can make now and in the next 25 or so years that may help me live a healthy life in my 70s, lord willing. Outside of vitamins, unless I have a medical issue or get to the point where it is absolutely needed I don't want to be on anything I have to take consistently to maintain my quality of life.

I know a lot of younger people take TRT for aesthetic and competitive reasons, thankfully I'm not worried about either of those. And Ernie is awesome, and definitely on TRT and/or PEDs, but he is an actor and if it helps him get more roles I support it.

This. There are things you can do to help before trying TRT if you think you might need it. #1 is diet and exercise. #2 is sleep. #3 is supplemental regiment with things that can help with hormone balance.

If someone feels like shite after trying all this then by all means go see about getting on trt there is no reason to just spend time and energy spinning your wheels doing all the right things and still feeling like shite.

ron is correct...trt should be brought into the mix when you are symptomatic and have tried lifestyle interventions

1) start lifting heavy arse iron
2) clean up the diet focusing on protein and meats(even fattier cuts) as the basis of the diet. Anabolic diet is very good at laying out a frame work to stay within

3) you can start looking at things like boron and dhea(i suggest something like sustain alpha first) and look to bring up the free test number. the total number doesnt matter as much as free test

4) get igf levels tested

5) for longevity it is important to maintain a very healthy blood sugar levels. stay away from processed carbs and try to limit them to

1- fruit
2- veggies
3- potatoes
4- rice

if you are looking to limit the blood sugar response you can eat the carbs with a fattier cut of meat or mix with some fat and eat not with protein except post workout

i am assuming you are already at a healthy weight and understand how to count macros etc

overlal to answer your question, depends on when the levels drop dramatically and your are seeing muscle loss and strength loss

for those in the fitness lifestyle, i would say somewhere in that 55-65 year old range is prolly going to be when most should look at it. that if you are non symptomatic and you are lifting heavy weights, feel good, look good and can still play good.

but the other component to that for skin longevity is peptides. i posted dr seeds book in the peptide thread. download it and read it and keep as a resource. listen to podcast and research the ones you are interested in, mainly ghrhs, ghrps, bpc etc

But wouldn’t preventative be better than after onset of symptoms?

The goal is to maintain current health, aesthetics, and physique. If you wait, then it’ll eventually be past the time you can maintain those for as long as possible.

not if you are monitoring levels etc

its not like boom...suddenly you have aged

i mean you can start whenever so long as done having kids, but i would try other things first as its a big decision

I don’t know. I get mid-lower back pain sometimes with squatting and they also tax me too much. I was doing sets of 5 with 225 a few weeks ago, but I’ve backed off since.

What do you see for this? I was interested in it once when recovering from an injury and the research seemed pretty thin for males. However, it seemed to have significant potential in females with suppressed test from birth control or other hormonal issues.

Its useless for muscle building/bodybuilding purposes BUT there is some evidence it can help with hormonal balance in men and slightly raise T numbers. I am using it now in conjunction with boron and am in week 2 of a 12 week protocol. 15mg boron daily with 50mg DHEA. So far so good. Of course, results will vary with everyone. I'm not expecting huge numbers out of this I am just expecting a little bump. Time will tell.

So you think the number is what is important.
That sounds ridiculous.
I am not taking any drugs that are not needed. Zero.

its legit

negative sides...no but i mean its a transdermal so pain in the arse but works well in helping raise overall Test numbers and works even better in conjunction with boron

I am 60….started TRT about 2 years ago….my starting number were not that low and I take a small weekly dose. I feel and look the best I have in years. I take peptides also. I’ve always gone to the gym but I am a lot more dedicated.
