I have an autoimmune condition that has caused my entire spine from neck to tailbone to be very stiff. Unable to achieve good form on any type of barbell or smith machine squat.

Should I bite the bullet and just get a hack squat/leg press combo machine?
I don't assume just seated quad extensions alone will build muscle and strength. I can deadlift no issue but seems to only work my glutes and hammies.

You'll have to attack it with a multitude of exercises. Squats are efficient because it hits so much if done correctly but you can hit and isolate quads, glutes, hammies, calves, abs and hips all different ways.

Sorry...hit Submit to fast. I can't do back or front squats anymore because of spinal fractures but split squats, step ups, lunges, glute bridges, pistol squats vis TRX, leg extensions, sled pushes and pulls and touch n go single leg box squats are all a part of my routine now

If your local gym has a “Belt Squat” try it. I believe that might be the best thing for you. I like it way better than a hack.

I have a home gym setup so exploring new options.
Used to have a squat machine at my local anytime fitness that was also a hack squat. Worked well for me.

Bulgarian Split Squats, Trap Bar DL

After I tore my meniscus, I just did the above + knees over toes stuff. When I resumed back squatting after a few months, I was actually stronger.

I tweaked my back doing squats a few months ago and started doing these to strengthen my glutes and hamstrings. I just had nothing there to do the work. Athleanx has a good video on proper form.

They truly suck though…but are very effective. I can tell a difference and feel my posterior chain engaged doing daily stuff now where it wasn’t before doing them. Also, my lower back doesn’t bother me at all any more. Played 36 holes last weekend and didn’t even feel it.
