Anyone ever had their AC joint 'cleaned up'? Trying to understand what it means and what the recovery timeline is.

I had it last Friday along with a rotator cuff repair. From what I understand they cut off a portion of the collarbone to create more space at the joint. I’m 7 days post op and it’s actually been a pretty painless recovery so far.

Actually yeah. 10 years ago. Had torn some of the meniscus in mine benching. Occasionally acts up when doing hanging exercises but overall way better. Hurt for about a year in 2010/11 before I did it.

Probably a subacromial decompression. The surgeon will go in with a burr and basically shave down the acromion. Pretty standard for arthroscopic surgeries.

What is the timeline you were given for recovery?

I’m at about 5 months of pain. Got a cortisone shot a few weeks ago and still have some pain towards the end of the week. I haven’t done any barbell work - only dumbbells and with anywhere from 20-50% of my typical weight.

Have you tried physical therapy?

No, I haven't. I basically took 2 1/2 months off and saw no improvement so I assumed that it was more structural than muscular, but I'm not a doctor so maybe that's not the way to think about it.

Find a fitness forward PT. I always recommend Delta do to their approach of treating the whole person, not just the problem

If you go through with this please post an update.

I have AC joint Osteoarthritis from benching along with bicep tendinitis which started along with the AC joint issues.

2 months of 3x a week PT did nothing for me.

Very similar situation to yours I’m around 4 months now and still lifting a fraction of my pre injury maxs. Reverse fly machine, front raises and deadlifts are a huge no go for me. And squats hurt like a biatch but I do them anyways

I was told by my ortho that AC joint cleanup and bicep tenodesis is an option but recovery from the bicep surgery is 6 months.

If the AC joint cleanup recovery is a only month or two I may try that first

I can do most exercises with minimal or no pain, but certain quick movements will be pretty painful. Also getting a lot of 'popping' that sometimes is painful but also relives pain. Definitely a weird situation - probably will follow up with him in a few weeks after I have enough time to figure out if it's a problem or not.
