Saw this article and thought it may be discussion worthy. I played professionally for a couple of years then transitioned to a club professional for another decade, so I had a good idea.

So, let’s say I have a good week at a non-signature event, around 20th or so. Maybe a little more than $100,000. That means:

Flight: $800
Accommodation: $3,200
Caddie: $10,000 (eight percent plus weekly rate)
Coach and trainer: $2,000
Food: $200
Federal: $37,000
Tournament state: $7,000

Meaning, I take home $39,800 from what is published as $100,000.

Let's say you have just 5 of those finishes a year. That's nearly $200,000 take home. It could be more if you have finishes below 20th but above the cut, but it also could be less if you miss a lot of cuts. You're not super rich, but you're definitely in the upper middle class. The only problem is there is no guaranteed salary unless you have endorsements.

Basically, there's a lot of ifs.

Fully exempt Tour players are guaranteed $500K now. They'll pay it up front before the year starts and start paying your earnings when you cross $500K. If you don't get to $500K, you don't owe the difference

Good grief, he could save some money if he wouldn't stay at a place that costs $450 a night.

I understand these guys want to be comfortable, but if I’m struggling to make a living on tour there’s a whole lot of costs I can cut back on right off the top.

Pretty wide gap between the haves and have nots in pro golf. That’s why I root for the underdogs and the no names who win that life changing check on the other tours. It’s also the reason I get guys going to LIV. Obviously, they were already in the upper stratosphere as far as golf compensation goes, but even at the tippy top there’s only so much room after Woods, Rory, Spieth ect.

All of these expenses would reduce the taxable amount as well.

As was stated in the article, it’s not the haves and have nots. It’s the haves and have mores.

Perhaps but more so for the average Joe and not pro golfers who are essentially running LLCs and have the money to hire really good tax attorneys and CPAs. That 37K probably should be analyzed a little closer.

We started a revolution over 2% tea tax… we’re a nation of pussies for putting up with the current scheme.

Some of these tour locations that’s probably as cheap as you can go. I mean sure when they are in Fort Worth I am sure there are Hamtpon Inns available or for $130, but in Hilton Head? Hawaii?
