What is the deal with raw wedges that rust?

What is it with having a raw finish that rust on wedges? I know not all of them are raw, I'll personally pay for something coated.
Just curious why some prefer this and do you clean the rust off and oil them or anything like that?

Helps increase spin and reduce glare. Plus they look better.

It's really only for glare reduction. They don't spin any more than chrome finished ones.

Raw wedges typically do cost extra. If you buy jet-black wedges and soak them in white vinegar for a couple of days they will turn into raw wedges. They will have a cool color initially and then rust like a raw wedge

It is fun to say: " Alright boys, i'm about to raw dog this hole!"

Pros play them because most play special grinds, not off the shelf. They may do a bit more heel or relief grind. Plated wedges aren't good for those customizations. They wear a bit faster as well, but that's not an issue for them.

Rust does not improve spin. They have tested that raw or chrome dry wedges spin the same. When they are wet, you lose spin in both but more on plated wedges than you do on raw.

I gotta ask since several posters mentioned it: is glare actually a problem? It's not something I've ever thought about with wedges or any other club.

I have raw vokeys for 2 reasons, no glare and I think that without the chrome plating they feel a little softer.

No.. I've never had a club shiny enough to make hitting an issue

I’ve definitely stepped over a wedge shot and thought about the sun beaming against the chrome. It isn’t very often - certainly not enough to dictate the finish of the wedge. But my shots are for fun.

I've definitely caught some glare in my eyes from my chrome wedges when setting up to a shot. Less so when the club is behind the ball. But I can see the appeal for a wedge that doesn't have that.
