What is membership like at Augusta?

Obviously I will never know. But I’m curious how this works. Is there a corp of locals who are there regularly, supplemented by the likes of Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, etc…. The membership list has some pretty notable names but I wonder how often Gates or Buffet or people like them are flying into Augusta to golf and hang out at the clubhouse. Just curious how often members are actually playing golf there. Or maybe there’s just enough that there’s always someone coming in to play even if they only come in every so often.

Is Gates really a member?
Yes. And so is Roger Goodell and apparently Peyton Manning.

No way Gates breaks 100 on that course.

Every "member" gets an allotment of tee times. Last I heard, 60-65% are corporate memberships, so CEO of x,y,z company are "members" but the membership is owned by the entity not the CEO. The tee times are usually 36-54 hole allotments piggy backed. So the groups will play back to back 18s over two days and that is their allotment. You also cannot bring a camera, they will have a person following you, that you likely never see except for a handful of specific moments (1st tee, 12th tee, Hogans Bridge, 18th green, etc).
There are a handful of local Augusta natives that are members, and handful I mean literally 4-5. Two of which are excellent local golfers, one is the master marker, Jeff Knox that is a local member and beaten some of the worlds best. I know its not a traditional country club per se but members can dine there. You can't just show up on a Tuesday hoping to catch a quick nine.
*My neighbor was one of the CEO members.

this is equivalent of driving across town to these people.

Actually surprised to hear that. I didn’t think it was like that.

Same. I thought they did try and keep it more intimate than that.
Not surprised by the highly regimented tee times. I just joined a very modest club myself and I golf almost every day now

I bet those that actually want to golf regularly are also members at clubs local to them as well.

I know a member who gets to play only a handful of times each year. He did tell me if you are ever invited to become a member and you ask how much that’s a automatic axe on your membership invite

It’s more than that for the locals.
The old Augusta families are well represented. There are also several doctors locally who are members.
Forbes or Fortune had an article about who was a member several years ago. I’ll try to link it.

If you're being considered, you got the money

Nobody knows exactly what the cost is but as far as the rumors go, it's actually not that expensive of a membership. Not even close to some of the more expensive golf courses in the US.

There was an article I read a few years ago where a member was being interviewed ahead of the masters and he basically told the journalist he could afford it if he were invited. I bet August has a massive endowment or trust fund plus whatever it makes off the Masters that pays for itself much more than initiation fees or membership dues that a typical club would need to keep running.

I heard they don't really have dues, they add up what it cost to run the club and divide it up among the members equally. With what they make off the Masters, I bet it's cheaper than a lot of people think. Also, the club isn't even playable End of May thru First of October.
Just played a course in Cashiers called Mountaintop and it was the closest thing to Augusta I've seen. Course was remarkable and the amenities were unreal.

I knew it had a massive dead period but I figured it’d be immediately preceding The Masters rather than afterwards. In what window do members play golf there?

October until mid May.
I doubt any one member plays 20 rounds a year.
In late May, the volunteers and full time staff have some play days. These are the only times a golf cart is used during the year.
A friend of mine got to go as a guest of a staff member. He said they basically played all day. At the end they just played 12,13,14 as many times as they could before dark. He eagled #2. They played the member tees.

Only 2/3 of Amen Corner?
14 is a fine hole, but how could you swap 11 for 14?

11 is inconvenient.
Tee is way back up the hill.
A loop of 12,13,14 does it easily.
Gives you a par 3 and par 5 and a par 4.
At that point, guys are just getting in extra holes.
They played 1-18 twice, then just whenever they found a gap. Everybody loves 12 and 13. 14 takes you back behind 12.
15,16,17 is another loop you could do.
But 11 tee is a bit out of the way.
