Nope thats when they were still there. the whole rt side of the fairway was tree line all the way to just about to 18 tee box, there is only like 2 or 3 trees left, which made the drive on 18 even harder if you missed right you were looking at least Bogey and more likely a double. lot of big hitters back in the day, I played with Beaver Pro in a tournament and he almost got it there.

Exactly, a long drive down the middle got you in the trees and in hard pan. It was a really good hole.

Of course there was no sprinkler system so in dry, dry Summer weather it would play shorter, but you still had to be accurate off the tee.

Amazing how the comments about the course sound so similar to how Webb played in the mid 70's. Even with the persimmon woods, blades and balata golf balls it does not sound much different. Have fond memories playing there in high school - had some great games with Gayle Sanchez, Charlie Kennon, Dickie Meyer and George Aucoin.

Back when we played Webb a lot done of the top players were Haile, Drury, Neese, Ott, and that era. The guys you listed were all a little older.

But Webb was a decent test back then and Al Michaels kept it up as good as you could expect with the resources available.

Fun times playing out there all day.

Double it sounds like we know each other, cause i played with all those guys went to school with Neese, Ott, Marty Huget, they were all better than me , because I played football and ran track I really didn't start playing again on a consistent basic till 2000

Back in the day an I'm talking way back ny dad would walk from Vigil street by city park to webb, back then it was called Westdale to caddie as a young boy,

As he grew older , he played with the Hebert Brothers, Bert Burdick, and many others Al Micheal BobbyNeese to name just a few, He once shot 64 and lost a dollars to Lionel Hebert subtle brag on my Pops.I still have his old mcgregor clubs that he played with back then

I couldn’t remember how to spell Huget so I left off of my list. I think he was the best of the bunch.

So you went to BRHS right? And you were a poet? I know right where you lived.

City wasn’t bad then either but Harry Neese never cared as much as Al Michaels did.

Yeh. 69. Punter and place kicker on football team We used to pitch quarters under the trees by #1 tee, yeh we got dropped off at 7 and picked up at dark I threw a nine iron in the trees on 18 one day, my ole man saw me took me home and whipped my arse. Made sure he never saw me throw one again, lol that alligator belt liked my arse

Talking about Chevelle dr? Believe it or not I hardly ever played city park. Just when they had jr tournaments. My age group was 3 and 9 holes

Ole man, this is Bobby Neese, you may have meant Harry Neese when talking about Al Michael, as my Dad, Harry was the pro at City Park and Webb for many years. In the old days when my Dad was winning local amateur tournaments in Baton Rouge, Westdale golf course was the LSU golf course with the Hebert brothers, I think Freddie Haas (the guy that ended Byron Nelson's 11 PGA tournament win streak) was there too along with Gardner Dickinson, among others. Harry won the BR City Tournament in 1960 and turned club pro for City Park shortly after. Thanks for the memories. I would be curious as to who your Dad was, as I may have known him.

Bobby, I remember your dad very well. He ran City.
I remember that you were a long knocker. I saw you drive it between the traps on one to the fringe.
That was a big hit back then.

Webb was nice in the late 60s. City not so nice. It got short changed.

Played Webb all the time back in 98 / 99 w/ the men's golf group that Ed Thielmann ran. Was fun playing in the game w/ those old guys - Ed, Sunny Richards (Richards Honda), Muff and the other old guys who I cant remember the names...

Most of the course is barren like a cow pasture. They need more trees for shade and for some sort of challenge since it’s so flat.

Webb?
Compared to courses many public courses around, Webb is more undulating. A lot of the holes have a nice roll.
And it use to be full of trees. Time took a lot of those away.

Paw paw always said that Webb was always his favorite layout of any course. He routinely shot under par there back in the 60s.

His name wasn’t mentioned among the greats who played at Webb back then, but perhaps some of you know him? I remember him mentioning Gale Sanchez and Gardner Dickinson.
