I played the other day. It's in really good shape, especially compared to where it was. But does anyone know why they are planting some 75 trees. They need to be removing trees, especially on 12 and a couple other spots.

My guess is drainage. Last time I saw they were in lower lying, mudy spots.

They lost a significant number of mature trees in July when hurricane/tropical storm Barry rolled through. I think most of the newly planted ones were in those areas.

I like that they're going back with Pine trees in a lot of places. At least you can grow grass under those.

Haven't played it lately but drive by it on the way home every day. Looks great from the road.

Way back in the day they let the road contractor building I 10 dump excess fill under the trees. It was largely clay with rocks mixed in. Webb was a great public course in the Kate 60s.

Beautiful trees. Very well kept by Al Michael and his staff. They had a big barn along number 7 where they kept all their equipment and tools.

College was two lanes as was Foster and Wards Creek wasn’t concrete lined. There were no apartments on 14, just woods.

Equipment wasn’t as good as today and holes 2, 4, 9, 13 and 18 were pretty long.

It was fun

fairways are, greens are better than usual but still pretty thin and compact, really slippery right now.

I couldn't imagine playing 2, 4, 9, 13, and 18 without my 460cc driver. Some of these courses haven't changed in decades and I wonder how anyone got on these greens in two or made any birdies.

I've gotten into golf architecture lately and I'm pondered what I would do if someone gave me Webb and $100,000. I think unconcreteing Wards Creek would go a long way into making it much more aesthetically pleasing. Idk if that is even possible, but I could see it looking much different.

I haven’t played Webb in years, good to hear they still have two long par 5s.

It was a different game then.

For instance you had a pitching wedge and a sand wedge with a big flange. No gap wedge and all that.

Long irons were in vogue and with all the trees at Webb you had to learn to hit a two iron low and roll up on the greens.

Of course back then you played with real woods. The best golfers would occasionally drive #1 when the tee was up. Best players could reach 7 in two with little trouble and 11 played like a tough 4 for most good golfers.
10 was also driveable and 8 was for the best players once they widened college.

The course was a lot of fun

#4 is the only par 5 that isn't reachable unless you're a bomber and it's bone dry. #13 is reachable in 2 on a dry day for sure.

Back in the day there was a big row of trees right at the top of the hill off the tee on 13. It made the hole more of a dog leg left. Cutting the corner was risky, but if memory serves the row of trees was wiped out by lightning and disease. But 4 was always longer and tougher than 13 due to the length and OB left.

But 13 was the better hole.

Was a pleasure playing Webb Park in high school. I won the City Amateur back in the day there. It was never in great shape, but back then the course standards were lower - you just teed it up and played it like it was. The front was pretty straight forward - #7 was a beautiful dogleg par 5. #10 was driveable, could hit #11 with an iron second shot, 12 & 13 were great holes, just tried to navigate 14,15 & 16 around the ditch, roads and apartments - #18 was a good finishing hole for sure. Funny story - was playing the par 3 #15 with David Haile one day when he missed the green with a wedge - the ball hit Foster road and bounce straight up - it came down directly on top of a patrol car driving by - the police stopped and jumped out of the car, like they were going to pull their guns - we hit the ground laughing - when they realized they got hit by a golf ball, they got back in the squad car and sped away!!! Just can't make that stuff up!
