US Open Conditions - scoring

Watched yesterday and watching this morning. I honestly believe that if I played that course yesterday, I may not break 100…I am guessing the only people shooting sub 85, other than the pros, are current and former high level D1 golfers.
Now, I am an old man…so move me to the member tees and I may have a shot…
The level these guys play at is mind blowing.

Here is a tool to see what you would shoot based on your current index or average score.
0-5's should be able to break 85.
5.1 - 10.0 should be able to hit or go under 90
10.1 - 17 should be able to break 100
0-5's should be able to break 85.
5.1 - 10.0 should be able to hit or go under 90
10.1 - 17 should be able to break 100

Well this is just wrong
I'm a 3.5 and shot an 85 in a tournament earlier this year. Safe to say that course was significantly easier than the Shinnecock with 30 mph wind.
A 10-17 can easily have a bad day and shoot 100. Why "should they be able to" break 100 at a US Open when they easily could drop 100 at a 6000 yard muni?

They probably worded it wrong in the title but the description is a little better but I agree, it would be better if it had a range and % chance of hitting that score. The video on "target score" embedded in the link helpes explain the methdology.
I would have preferred something like...
a 5 index
72-75: ___%
75-79: ___%
80-85: ___%
etc.

I’m a 5.9 and from the tournament tees I’m not breaking 90.

I played there 2 years ago I was a +2 then and shot 79 and that wasn’t from the championship tees and the rough wasn’t near as brutal, the greens probably were rolling faster though. It’s an insanely difficult track.

Plus 2 - where did you play college golf?!?!

I know it's a cliche, however, tournament golf is a different animal. Shooting 72 with your buddies at the local muni will get you an 85+ score in a local qualifier. My son played D1 golf, he's 30 now and still plays in qualifiers. He sees it all the time. At least half the field has no business showing up at a qualifier, however, the USGA will gladly take your money

Looks like it's going to be brutal today.

A friend of mine who won the US Public Links played in the Open when Pavin won.
On Friday he was 1 under after #12 and finished 10 over to miss the cut.
He hit it in the high fescu and it took 4 shots to just get out. He said it was brutal.

Yea I’m a 4-5 true handicap. And no way I can break 90 there in these conditions.
Scratch golfers aren’t breaking 85

Same for me, 5 handicap, good short game but hardly hit it out of my shadow with driver so from those tees in that wind it would be BRUTAL!

I didn’t, I’ve just been playing for 50 years and don’t work between April and September so I play lots of golf. I’m not that good anymore, don’t hit the ball as far as I’ve gotten older. My index is 0.7 right now.
