Subject is pretty self explanatory. I’m severely struggling hitting up on the ball with driver and it’s literally costing me 30-40yds of carry. I’ve tried putting a headcover a foot in front of the ball, the Rahm method of grounding driver 6” behind the ball to trick yourself into that being your low point, plenty of spine/shoulder tilt towards the back foot etc. can’t for the life of me increase my AOA or launch angle. What am I missing? I feel as if I’m almost trying to hard to hit the ball on the upward arc causing my swing to never actually bottom out and hitting everything low in the face as I for like of better words end up “swinging over” the ball.

I’m talking -3 to -4 AOA killing 170ball speed swings. Launch angles in the single digits.

What y’all got for me to try before I break down and just go have a professional line me out.

Pick up your left heel on backswing and before you reach the top, stomp it back down hard. Harder you stomp, more you fire the left hip back. I have had to bring ball back in my stance since I started doing this, but make much more consistent upward strikes.

ball position?
head moving too much towards the target in downswing?
head tilt at impact is wrong?

No farther back than inside front heel

Head could definitely be moving forward of center line

Feel like I do a pretty conscious effort to keep the feeling on not letting water fall out of left ear through impact… but maybe.

Golf is not that hard. Just tilt your left shoulder toward the sky at addressed.

I tilt my pelvis instead. It probably makes my shoulder go back too, but it works better for me.

This is a good drill to make sure you ball position is good.

What are your club path numbers? An over the top out to in path can lead to steep aoa.

I assume you have a launch monitor since you know your aoa, Have you videoed yourself from behind and in front to see what you're doing? That could help bring some clarity to your problem as well.

I would say don’t try hitting it. Just swing through.
The orange whip really helped me get the feeling right.

Driver tends to stay -2° to +1 on path so you could say I’m slightly out to in biased with driver. Mainly play a cut

Irons I also play steep on the AOA (-5/-6) +2path but I don’t want to change that. I compress my irons like a mofo.

Not recently and I definitely need to. I had my gallbladder removed two weeks ago so probably shouldn’t even be swinging yet but I couldn’t help trying it out lastnight.

Go see a pro.

The average PGA Tour player has an aoa of -1.5 so it's not a terrible thing to hit down on the driver, it's thought to be more accurate. Now if you're -3 or higher that's not good. What is your spin rate?

I believe this data is like 10 years old

The website I got the info from was from 2017, according to 2024 Trackman shotlink, tour average is -.9, still negative and Ping cites it as closer to -1.5

That is pretty high, have you been properly fitted for a driver? The right club/shaft combo can help tremendously. I picked up 20 yards of carry with a custom fitting.

Maybe you’re not getting into enough right side bend on the downswing due to the surgery

This is what I was about to say. Having the proper shaft for your swing in a driver actually does make a difference

Having the right shaft is important, but it doesn't change your attack angle from -3 to +5.

I went from 8-11 launch to 14-17 launch in a span of 6-7 months without switching drivers.

I didn't change ball position either. I didn't put excessive weight on my back foot. It literally just requires different feels more than anything.

Tee height is very important obviously. Currently I tee my ball up a mile. This counteracts my miss that happened to be lower on the face.

Another thing that has helped me is trying to maintain knee flex throughout the swing, vs standing up too quickly and changing angle through the ball, catching the ball low on the face, etc.

2 more things that I occasionally do if my launch sneaks back down to 12-13, is 1) tilt my head slightly back at address and maintain a feel of keeping it behind the ball during the swing. And 2) A very Subtle hip tilt at address and focusing on maintaining that angle throughout the swing. (for righties, this means left hip tilted up and above the right hip at address).

I ended up going with a higher lofted driver to counteract the same exact thing.

Place the ball 6in outside your lead foot at address. To the point where it’s uncomfortable. In order to hit the ball you will teach yourself to stay behind with a little weight on your right foot.

The more you shift to the left side in your downswing the more steep of an angle you are creating.

The more comfortable you get with that ball position, slowly start moving the bal back to your lead toe or just inside.

My AOA on my last monitor session with driver was +4.3, and my only swing thoughts are keeping my right knee bent in my backswing and keeping my right heel planted in backswing transition.

Made some progress tonight in the right direction until tragedy struck. Looking behind the ball about 3” instead of at it seemed to help. Unfortunately I didn’t see the last few recommendations until I had already came back in the house.

The tragedy…..

And no it wasn’t off the hosel or even the heel.
