If you play golf in north Texas you know what I’m talking about. We get these lies around the green that may as well be concrete, you cannot use the bounce of the club because the ground does not give at all so the club just bounces up into a skull or it grabs the club and you chunk it.

Basically you have to make absolutely perfect contact, ball first then ground, if you aren’t perfect it’s a skull or a chunk.

I am working on hinging my wrists and locking them, then putting the ball back in my stance, I have great luck with this on distance and accuracy, but I still miss hit a few times a round which is very frustrating

The hard thing is since it’s a chip you can’t really swing hard and make a divot, so basically I’m trying to pick the ball clean… What’s the strategy for this shot to make sure you make solid contact?

Use your wedge with the lowest amount of bounce, get so close to the ball that at address only the toe of the club is touching the ground.

That's a tough spot to be in. It doesn't work in all situations, but I sometimes will pull a hybrid and chip with that.

Putt it or belly a 9 iron or hybrid depending on lie.

If you prefer your wedge, raise the heel and hit the ball with the toe.

If you can play a bump and run shot with a 9 or 8 iron do that, but if you have to carry a bunker or hit a higher shot. Place the ball just inside right foot. Put most of weight on left side, toe of club down. Remember the toe of the club cuts and the heel wants to dig in but will bounce off a hard lie. All of that should help you hit the ball first and get it to check up.

Make sure your trail arm doesn’t stall.

Yes there’s a reason putter off the green is called a Texas wedge, I putt it when I can.

Great advice from everyone on only having the toe of the club on the ground, I will definitely try that.

You definitely get some nasty lies here this time of year. Courses designed like they’re in Virginia with turtle back and elevated greens, then you’re trying to chip off of rock hard dirt, it’ll really makes you think you suck

Weak grip.

Shallow as possible.

Use lower lofted clubs.

I bought a pitching wedge with 3 or 4 degrees of bounce (not much) years ago to play hard pan courses. I kind of punch down and trap the ball low. If I am close enough in most situations, I’ll just putt it.

Can you putt some of these?
If so, it is probably the percentage play.

Experiment with higher hands.
Hold the wedge like a putter.
Back and through.

Definitely that time of year in Houston as well. Chips from tight lies give me nightmares. Chunk is even the first thing I imagine when I'm watching someone hit that shot.

Yes as many as possible. There is one course here in particular I play often since it’s close to my house. It is designed like a northern course with elevated greens, slopes that will roll your ball all the way down if you miss in the wrong spot, and often trouble you are forced to carry when chipping. I’m all for courses like that, but it’s a muni and right now the ground around the greens is just rock hard dirt or weeds. Trying to hit an elevated shot is almost impossible, but there are certain times you don’t have a choice

High hands, setup with only toe on the ground, ball back in your stance, and putting stroke. It’s a bump and run with a wedge.

It takes some practice but once u get your low point and distance control, it’s a game changer.

I use my 8i and use a putting stroke, don't break the wrist.

Pull your 8i, grip it as your putter, stroke it as your putter.

You’d be surprised how easy it becomes…

I use my Hybrid with a putting stroke if I don't have to fly it over a bunker.

Love that play when it’s available, but she having to chip directly up a hill with a green sloping away from you into a bunker it’s not always available
