Time for some new irons…suggestions?

I’ve always been simple when it comes to equipment. I’m a weekend/summer hacker. I currently hit some Slazenger Royal Panthers from the ‘80’s, steel shaft. I’ve never been a long hitter, but I consistently shoot mid-80’s on my home course. I’m just now getting used to hitting some Taylor Made R7 woods with stiff shaft.
I don’t need the newest or top of the line irons. I just want something NEWER, bang for the buck, and what would be a smooth transition for me accord to the experts on here.

If looking for new, good value game improvement irons I would consider are the Mizuno Jpx hot metal and ping g425 (older generation but still available new). Srixons are very popular here but more $$, either zx4 or zx5. I would go to a golf shop and hit some and see what you like.
If you just want to order a set online and save money, then pxg 0211 are good and a good bit cheaper and the Takomo irons are probably the cheapest that still have good reviews.
Remember that todays 5 iron loft is a 3 or 4 iron from the 80-90s and PW is an 8 or 9, so 5-GW is more of a standard set these days.
Of course you can go used but I find used prices generally not all that attractive these days and it takes more knowledge to find a good deal

1. Ask friends if you can swing their clubs at the range. Try different irons.
2. Go to Second Swing online and buy what you like.
For new clubs, PXG has close out irons cheap.
Tour Edge has good prices as well.

Easy answer.
PXG 0211 Irons.
Super forgiving, long hitting.
99.00 per club regardless of the shaft you choose.
Example- 7 irons with the MMT Shaft in 699.00
I know a 4hcp and a 22 hcp that play them. Very easy to hit and they look great.

Most people will not be fit into a 70g iron shaft, just too light. Also he asked for a “smooth transition” from 30 year old steel shafts that are likely 130 grams, which light shafts are not going to be. Midweight 100-120g shafts are more the standard these days and likely to be a smoother transition and better fit. If buying blind from the PXG selection of no up charge shafts the KBS tour lite, true temper elevate or elevate tour would fit in that window.

Man I just got a set of Takomo 101T I love them, increased my distance and they have a lot of forgiveness. Also they didn’t break the bank

I like my Titleist 200 irons. But, I really love my Aerotech shafts even more. They are expensive but worth it it, imho.

There are a lot of good options out there. I'll probably only ever own Mizuno irons from here on out just because both Mizuno sets I've owned have been my two favorite sets in my 25 years of golf.
If you don't want to spend a bunch of money on a brand new set, if you have a local Edwin Watts, they typically have a big used club section. My EW probably has 30 used sets in there right now.

And they want near new prices for the clubs in my experience

Not going to lie I've never bought any so I never looked at the prices
Only place I've bought used from is Calloway pre-owned. The 3 wood and hybrid I bought was I think the next to best condition (forget what their condition scale is), but they were mint. Looked like they'd never been hit. I'd definitely buy from them again. Not sure if they sell irons though.

Played with BECU ping eye 2's for thirty years and just last year got some PXG's when they were like half off for the Gen 4's. I do like the PXG's, but every now and then still take the Pings out on the range.
