The game needs Tiger

No it doesn’t. Tiger hasn’t been relevant in two years. Commentators need Tiger cause it gives them something to discuss. And speculating about when and if he’ll return and how he’ll do is a good way to fill air time. But the game is bigger than Woods. It’s survived without Hogan or Palmer or Nicholaus. It will go on without Tiger. It just won’t have a dominant player like TW to hold out attention.

Edit: relevant is the wrong word. He hasn’t been a factor in 2 years. He’ll always be relevant to the game because of his dominance.

I don’t know what I’m doing this weekend but I do know that I will not be watching golf. The announcers will be insufferable talking about Tiger.

Don't like him at all but hope he can recover and play again. Ben Hogan was in a much worse crash and had far less advanced medical care and made it back.

Regardless of how much you care for the man, he’s elevated golf to where it is today.

Tiger had a Synthes tibia rod for compound fx of right tibia and locking plates and screws for distial tibia/fibula fx on left side... he also had compartment syndrome that required a fasciotomy...for u non medical people that a condition that due to excessive swelling the fascia is cut to relieve tension or pressure that's cutting off circulation in a limb to the tissues or muscles.. Long recovery....lots of rehab ...of course back injury was probably aggravated in the accident as well...tough guy but this is bad injury...

It’s just approaching the 2 year anniversary of him winning the masters

I am happy I got to see him win again, I was too young to appreciate his peak (30 years old). This fricking sucks

I don’t know, both crashes appear to be severe. Hogan was 36 and Woods is 45 recuperating from back surgery.
Woods will get better medical care and rehab than Hogan did by a long shot.

Before the crash we didn’t know if Tiger would ever compete again. Without knowing how bad his leg/ankle were broken yesterday, it would be an extreme long shot for him to be playing on the regular tour ever. The Senior tour who knows?

I can tell u that all Masters badge owners who dabbled in the secondary Master badge market with the Masters hospitality companies will miss Tiger woods tremendously..the days of $6000-8000 4-day badges are over...

Hogan was recovering from his injuries nicely, then the doctors found that blood clots were traveling up from his legs and without any kind of anti-clotting drugs like we have today, they were helpless. They found a big one that was going to kill him for sure making its way up from his legs. So, someone called the best vascular surgeon in the US who happened to live in New Orleans. The Air Force sent a B-29 bomber down to pick him up and they flew him to El Paso. He got a police escort to the hospital and he went immediately into surgery on Hogan. All they could do to stop the clots was to tie off the main artery bringing blood back up from his legs. It was a permanent and irreversible operation. It saved his life, but it meant that his legs would painfully swell with the slightest exertion for the rest of his life. They thought it would be a miracle if he ever walked anything halfway close to normally again. Playing golf against, much less at the highest level was unthinkable.

Of course, he won another four or five majors after that but his schedule became increasingly limited. Still he won all three majors he played in 1953. Remember in those days, there was no golf on Sunday. Two rounds were played on Saturdays. So with those legs Hogan had to walk 36 holes on a Saturday to win.

I edited. He’ll always be relevant because of his achievements. But he hasn’t been a factor for a while.

Unless your obsessed with him and are always wet with anticipation of his return- which I’ve never been.
He generated biz, but he was seldom around after Friday.

Good Twitter thread on Tiger and his injuries by what looks to be an orthopaedist. Posted it here instead of the MSB because that thread is a shite show.

Tiger had this done but it does not mean he had a compartment syndrome. It is common in severe tibia fractures to release the compartments prophylactically so you don’t develop a compartment syndrome. I suspect this was the case

I hope this was the case.

The game not needing Tiger and Tiger being relevant can co-exist. The reason it can do that is because of Tiger. He has crafted the next generation. He also was literally the talk of Augusta 4 months ago after a -4 on Thursday. Mind you winning the 2019 Masters and very close to doing the same in 2018 @ the PGA & British. IMO that British is up there with the 09 PGA as a major Tiger lost.

The future of golf could not be brighter. You have 20 year old newcomers who are very likable and 40 year olds who have been around for 15 years now who are exactly the same. The KornFerry is loaded with good dudes and incredible talents. Just look at Homa last weekend and where he was 3 years ago. Golf is in its prime right now from a branding standpoint.

If anything, the weirdest part of being a product of the Tiger generation (I'm 29), is that we have all come to accept that despite the greatness, Tiger is really just a psychologically fricked up guy. His humor isn't really funny. He's a try hard. And it seems like he is constantly trying to force that his kids share some similar admiration for him as he apparently did for his dad. He's a weird dude, but at the end of the day, he has captivated an entire industry for 25 years. That still weighs more than all his faults and I’ll be right in the pits cheering him on as he hobbles to major 17 or hobbles to the honorary starter tee box.
