I think it helps people to take the club back inside and feel the loading of the right arm(or shallowing as they call it now) earlier in the swing so they can just pivot into the ball rather than taking it back "on plane" and having to load in the downswing, provided the person isn't lifting up in the backswing and actually turning.

Seems more natural and promotes an intuitive transition without having to reroute the club in the downswing.

Take it too far inside and you get it across the line at the top. Not a good position unless you're in to pushes or hooks.

Do you click on the golf board and say, "I think I'm going to give bad advice today"? Very few tour players have the club inside the hands at P2

snead and hogan both had shallow takeaways. it takes a lot more rotation to properly hinge the club taking it back vertically as opposed to more horizontally. the tour guys are more flexible than your avg golfer, so they can turn adequately to compensate for higher hands. joe bob, not so much.

Hogan wasn't ridiculously inside. In fact, he was very neutral

This position is dead and nobody that has ever taught a golf lesson would say this is a good takeaway.

hogan's irons were very flat.

also, second image violates one of the rules previously stated. he's lifted up out of his "spine angle"

If you're a shitty player and banana everything that advice might help.

Flat and inside are 2 totally different things. Actually taking it back inside typically creates lift.

And you have no idea if hes changed spine angles, you didn't see it at address.

Yep, my fatal flaw. The takeaway is basically the thing i spend most of of my time on. If not, hooks and blocks are coming.

The back swing is meaningless.

This is hands down the worst golf advice I've personally ever read

Hogan did not jerk the club inside on the take away. He took it back on plane and then set it flat at the top.

Sergio takes it back on plane and then drops it into the slot

Lee Trevino takes it back way outside and then loops it into the slot

Sneed didn’t jerk it back inside, he set up with a closed stance, and then was slightly over the top coming through with a club face that was slightly open to his path resulting in a pull fade ball flight

Anyone reading this, OP’s advice is utterly terrible. NO PGA PRO worth his salt would advice you to take it back to the inside. Not a single one. As someone else said, jerking the club inside on the takeaway promotes finishing the back swing “across the line”, a place from which no consistently good thing can come.

It's all about where you end up at impact. Nothing else matters.

That’s absolutely true. There are a lot of ways to get there and all that matters is that your club face and path sync up to produce a shot that makes the ball go towards the intended target. A guy who absolutely owns a bad swing can score with it.

But OP’s advice isn’t what any golf pro would teach someone who is struggling to produce a consistent shot. The purpose of the back swing is to get the golf club and body in to an optimum position to consistently deliver the club to the ball in the right way.

Jerking it inside at takeaway isn’t going to produce that result for the vast majority of players.

ITT, we have a bunch of terrible golf advice.

"No thing as too far inside"

"the back swing is meaningless"

"its all about where you end up at impact. nothing else matters"

I mean, I kind of get what the last two quotes are getting at, but still. No good player would ever give that type of advice.
