I'm convinced I'll never get all aspects of my game to line up on any given day.

6 or 8 months ago, my drive was good, my 5-9 iron play was good, and my short game was crap. Bunker play was crap. Putting, very inconsistent.

4 or 5 months ago, my drive started struggling for a few rounds, spraying it OB 4 or 5 times a round but iron play was still good, and short game became a bit better. Bunker game became acceptable, not great but also not spending multiple strokes in a stupid bunker. Putting improved to acceptable, but not great.

Lately, my drive is back to straight and getting above average distance, short game is on point, bunker play is now trying to get close to the pin instead of just getting out. But I'm absolutely losing it on my iron play. I have 3 or 4 strokes a round where I straight shank it to the right. I've almost hit a couple of people and am hesitant to hit when people are 80 degrees to my right or forward.

Shot an 82 yesterday with a 7 on the second hole (par 4), and a couple of doubles. Did get an eagle and snagged one bird though. Iron play continued to struggle yesterday. One dead right shank, and a couple just left out right a bit.

I realize I'm playing decent golf, but I've stagnated in the low 80s and I really want to be in the 70s consistently.

Phuck this game. I'll be playing again in a couple of days.

You will never have all three phases of the game going at the same time. You only need 2/3 to score well

That's golf for most of us weekend warriors. We either choose to not practice as much as we should or we simply don't have the time. What sucks, is that by the time most of us retire from work, we will have missed our prime golf years. Thank god for Senior Tees I guess.

I get probably more time on the course than most. I average 3 or 4 rounds most weeks. Been working on a project in my spare time lately and have only gotten to golf 1 or 2 rounds a week. Admittedly, I NEVER hit the range. I find the range boring and sometimes detrimental to my game, but it's really where I need to spend some time.

The beauty of being a early to mid teen handicaper is sometimes you play like a single digit

The horror is sometimes you play like you just picked up a club

An eagle is great,

Don’t worry about the rest.

You are playing 5 games(at least) when you play golf: 1. Driving 2. Approach 3. Pitching and chipping 4. Putting 5. Mental/course management

I screw up #5 more than I should.

A better decision twice around could really help me avoid penalty strokes.

I try to Practice putting 50% of practice. 30 % pitching/chipping 10% approach 10% driver.

I am the opposite and work on my swing much more than that. I've focused heavily on the driver the last month and it's paying dividends now, much straighter, longer, and more reliable. Yeah, drive for show putt for dough, but the game is miserable when you are constantly 3 off the tee and searching in the crap for your ball.

I find I have unproductive range sessions when I focus on just one section of the bag in a session, like a mid iron day or a wedge day or a woods day. I am much more focused when I play simulated rounds.

Tonight for example, started off hitting 7i for about 10-15 strokes. Then switched over to driver for about 10-15. Then started a simulated round having to hit targets and yardages as I mentally worked my way through 18 holes. Driver, 8i. Driver, 7W, gap. 4W, 9i, gap. Etc, like that. That took 2 buckets and just about 2 hours.

Then hit the practice green for an hour working on various shots with my 56*, short sided, flops, pitches. Then various shots with gap wedge. Bump and runs with PW and 8i. Finally, short sided chips with the 8i, handle up, putting stroke.

I didn't even practice putting as I rarely 3 putt and it's overall pretty solid. Obviously I could always use practice though.

Hey, I was out of the house for 3 hours, I need to time manage practice.

And yeah, I don't think I've put together a round yet this summer where every phase has been clicking. One is always stronger than the other.

This is exactly what I do when I go to the range. Simulate a hole, and if I happen to mishit a second shot, I'll swing two or three with that same club to get that muscle memory. Then carry on. You NEVER hit the same shot twice in a row on the course, so why would hitting 20 balls with a 7 iron in a row be productive?

I get a large bucket of balls, and hit 6 or 8 shots with each club moving through the clubs, then start the simulation.

Golf is frustrating. I played my first round last summer at lsu with some rental clubs. Thought it was fun so while I was finishing school I pieced together a used set. So I’ve been playing a good amount the last six months. Right now I shoot in the 90’s pretty much every round but I’ve been in the high 80’s a handful of times. My best is 86 for now. Shot a 97 yesterday and I was really frustrated with how I played, but at the same time I can’t be too upset since I haven’t been able to hit the range with all this damn rain. I’m thinking about signing up for some lessons after I get used to my work schedule.
