The golf woes

My game is so frustrating. Got my score into the upper 70s only to develop a hosel shot that spiraled out of control. I spent 8 months figuring out why I was hoseling the ball and recovering from bad habits, finally get back to low 80s, high 70s golf then the hosels start again this weekend.
I played a round Thursday, two rounds Saturday and a round yesterday.
Thursday, I shot an 83 which is decent to normal for me, but I was really disappointed with a couple of shots that kept me out of the 70s. First round Saturday, played a more difficult course and had 3 birdies on the front, and a triple on the 6th hole to finish with a 39 on the front. Drove the green on the next par 4 though so that helped relieve the frustration of a triple. Kinda fell apart and failed to capitalize on birdies on the back 9 to finish with an 81.
Second round Saturday, 4 over on the front, then the hoseling began. Shot a 93. Wrote it off to being tired on the back 9, went home and rested for Sunday's round.
Got to the range yesterday morning and the hoseling continued so I decided to take some risks that I normally wouldn't take with the driver that paid off. All of my second shots were 100 yards and in so I just had to work with a punch shot all day with a shot I don't normally play. Shot an 83 with 2 birds and a sandie yesterday which felt like a miracle score for not being able to fully swing an iron confidently.
It's really difficult to string together 18 holes without a major flub shot that costs you.
Guess I'll hit the range this week. I think I'm standing too close to the ball. We'll start there.

Feel your weight more in your heels,
And try to keep the club more in front of you through the swing.
I hit the push-slice on a 9 iron Saturday.
It was putrid.

We’ve all been through it at some point. It really sucks. I had it for almost a year. Got over it and it came back.
For me, it happens when I’m getting too far away from the ball at address. The fix for me is to hit punch shots on the range with the ball almost at my toes. I’ve heard a few pros say you can’t stand too close to the ball but you can definitely stand too far away.

Hoseled shots mean I’m using my arms to initiate the downswing rather than my hips. Gets the club started to far out.
Shooting in the 70s consistently takes a lot of work. You’re gonna have your off days

your hips are likely getting closer to the ball at some point in your swing. keep your trail hip back in transition and push the left hip back and away from the target

Last time I had just gotten my score down in the 70s somewhat more consistently was maybe 18 months ago. Then the hosel shot began and I worked a lot of bad habits into my game to fix it, only to realize I was breaking my left elbow combined with a bad swing pattern. I'm going to try to forego chasing the rabbit this time and change one thing at a time.
Thanks for all the advice so far in the thread. I was mostly venting my frustration with this stupid game I'm addicted to, but I will certainly work on some of these suggestions.

It was the opposite for me when I started hitting the hosel. Counterintuitive, but I needed to get closer to the ball.

I was in excellent (for me) form about a year ago. I've played a ton and beaten probably thousands of balls at the range and my swing feels horrible now. Probably the most inconsistent striking I've had since I started playing golf. Even when I get the exact result I'm looking for in flight and distance, the swing/strike rarely "feels" good and I'm so inconsistent I can't pick up on the cues that occur on the "good" shots and hone in on those. I feel like I will set up a certain way, make my natural swing and while it feels shitty, it will go where I was trying to go, so then I try my best to set up the exact same way, with the exact same thoughts I had on the immediately preceding swing and it's a top/shank/hook/you name it.
It's like I have zero idea why my good shots are good and my bad shots are bad. I know I need a few lessons, but this is probably the worst its been since picking up clubs 6 or 7 years ago. I just have no idea what I'm doing in my swing.
Very frustrating and I'm almost at the point that I feel like I need to take a real break and come back.

I was on the border of taking a break a year back when someone casually mentioned I was breaking my left arm really bad in my swing. I focused on hyperextending my elbow through my swing and I started making crisp clean contact and the only issue I had after that was missing with a pull. It's crazy that it always comes back to the basics.
This game is so finnicky. I'll go out and shoot a great round, and feel like I know what I'm doing every stroke. To a point where I feel like I can maintain the swing long term. Then I'll go out the next time with the same confidence until something goes awry and my game is shot to hell REAL quick. Every time I pick up the club it feels foreign.
I don't even talk a lot of trash to buddies that sometimes do because it can come and go like that. Manage your highs and lows. Never get too cocky/confident, and weather the storm when it's not good.

Hands Rolling and coming too inside in the Takeaway causes hosel shot for me. It's frustrating as hell.

I feel like if I played with my buddies today they'd wonder if I had got some sort of head injury wherein I've forgotten how to make solid contact with the ball.

then the hosels start again this weekend
I watched a buddy struggle with this just yesterday. He typically shoots anywhere from low to high 70s and it was tough to watch. He hit 4 absolute cold shanks yesterday and it just affects him mentally.
I feel fortunate that, although I've hit the occasional shank, I've never gotten a case of "the shanks." For me, it's always because I'm trying to play some crazy open faced shot or I'm trying to put some extra zip on the ball because I need it for that particular shot.
I have trouble knowing what to say to him in the moment to help out, so I just end up shutting my mouth, so as not to make him feel any worse. I can see his body stop turning and he's decelerating into the ball, but he's convinced it's because his weight is not on his heels enough.
Now, I'll have my share of other issues, but thankfully the shanks haven't been one of them. Yet.

Chipping shanks are killing me right now

My back went out on me on #10 this morning.
I’d love to be able to hit bad shots

It absolutely destroys my confidence the first time it occurs. And the fix is opposite of what I think it is, so the harder I try to fix it on the course, the worse I get.
You're making the right decision to stay quiet unless he asks you if you're seeing something in his swing.

I'll keep that in perspective. Could always be worse I guess. Golf was giving me back problems for awhile, but I lost about 40 lbs last year and the back hasn't been an issue since I've lost the weight.

Got a massage yesterday, 6 birdies on the round today.
I think I need to tip the masseuse better

This is so true. More so stringing together 9 for me. The other day I was +3 through 6, and then tripled two par 5s in a row. Just a total collapse.

My first round last saturday I was I think even par through 5 and tripled 6. Birdied the next hole and went par bogey for 3 over on the front. There's always that ONE hole seemingly every 9.
The sunday before this last weekend, I finished a 9 one under par which was my first time shooting a 9 under par. Birdied 9 to get it there. Proceeded to shoot like 7 or 8 over on the back. Couldn't get anything going.
I went to play Wednesday after work just to make sure I wasn't going to hosel anymore shots and didn't do it one time. I was simply standing too close to the ball. I played two balls on most holes since I was playing by myself. Taking the highest scores I shot a 93. Adding the lowest scores was a 73.
