I’ve played off and on for 8~ years, and still no better than I was 7 years ago. I shoot high 80s-high 90s depending on how much I break out the Texas foot wedge, but I’m at a point where I can play 1-3 times a week but I’m not really getting any better playing by myself or with the 3 guys that are worse than me. I can’t hit a 300 yard drive down the middle of the fairway with a pretty draw or top it 100 yards like a grandma. My irons are sometimes OK, mostly not. I’ve got a 20 year old rescue 5 wood that I hit 200 yards pretty straight almost every time, but I can’t hit any other fairway wood/hybrid consistently. My short game is not horrible.

Point me in the right direction golf board. Dallas area.

There is so much great info on YouTube.

Indoor lessons where they video your swing are the best.

I’ve watched various YouTube fixits, and the more you watch the more contradictory it gets.

Just find a reasonably priced pro in your area with good reviews. You aren't trying to make a living playing golf so you don't need to go out there and find the best in the city.

I would avoid generic YouTube tips that aren't tailored to your swing.

Northern Texas PGA Section
Here are 107 PGA teaching pros in your area. I would find a couple that are closest to you and search their names for reviews

I like the old guy from Scratch Golf Academy, on YouTube. He's pretty good, and easy to follow.

I’m about your skill level, and I ran through YouTube videos without much luck. The things that helped me most were fixing my grip (based on my swing) swing plane, and positioning.

Personally I find my 3 wood one of the hardest clubs to hit in my bag. I either get too much or too little. Very rarely do I hit it pure

Have you ever filmed your swing?

Practice with intent. Never pound balls without working on specifics. Practice the majority of 150 yards in on the range and short game. Also, Film your swing. Identify your flaws.

Mike Malaska is a great teacher on YouTube.

If making swing changes... if it doesn’t feel weird or very different, you didn’t change anything. It can be a roller coaster but don’t give up. If it were easy, everyone would play.

Spend an hour a week at the pitching green. Work 30 yards and in. Then spend another 30-1hr putting a week. Get it to when you miss the green within 30, you can get up and down in no more than 3 shots and sometimes 2.

Also, if your swing isn’t terrible, it could be that you are playing with the wrong clubs for your current swing. Try a fitting/lesson that gives you some swing numbers.

I agree with birdie and coach. Pounding ball after ball at the range never helped me. It helped me a lot playing with somebody better than me. Always play better.

Play the cut off the box. Being 280 in play everyhole is much better than 300 and hitting it on twice.

Get really good at 120 and in, you'll see scores drop.

I’ve never been one for training aids. But the yellow whip has been good if anything swinging it just about every day keeps me limber. Keeps me in rhythm. My swing get hurried and everything falls apart. This helps with my tempo.

Plus it’s a good warmup tool for when you don’t have a range available.

Yes, I made a thread but then Dallas got really fricking cold and I didn’t play much after that. I live 10 min from Waxahachie CC and have been playing there lately, it’s just in piss poor shape but I’ll go see Mike.

He teaches a move that has to be felt for a correct downswing. You have to get the club working out in front. Without that action, you flip because you’re stuck. There is no getting around that fact.

For a beginner or mid level player that can improve their downswing and does not understand what working the club out in front means, Malaska explains it perfectly.

You’re also wrong about who he teaches but it’s all good. The dude has worked with an insane amount of talent.

Yeah it’s always in bad condition, but he’s a great teacher. And for 50 bucks an hour you really can’t beat it. He’s better than Randy smith over at Royal oaks and charges 1/3 the price.

Go back to the fundamentals. It doesn’t matter how ugly or pretty your swing is, if your fundamentals suck, you will suck. I’ve seen some god-awful swings produce scores in the low 70s / high 60s. Fundamentals must be sound.

Ensure your grip is somewhat neutral, or at least not overly strong or weak. Make sure your feet are open to the target, with your club face square to it. Make sure your ball position is not too far forward or too far back.

Just those three things can produce significantly lower scores from where you are. Going to a professional for a lesson, they will work on mostly those three things. You can save a lot of time and money doing it yourself.

As someone else said, try to get someone to video your swing. Take pictures of your address to see ball position. Fix your grip in the mirror.

Finally, no matter how good your short game is, it can always be better. I pride myself on being able to make a putt from just about anywhere, but my pitching and chipping is awful. It’s the difference between a 76 and a 70 for me. That’s 6 strokes.

Good luck!
