Golf Magazine

“The PGA [of America] uses this money, and the PGA Tour gets 20 percent that goes into the retirement of every member. The 12 players supposedly need to eat it and their intellectual property gets abused for the benefit of 200 other people. That’s not right.”

The PGA of America does distribute 20 percent of the Ryder Cup media-rights revenue to the PGA Tour, a PGA of America spokesperson confirmed. But how much money is that? Neither the PGA of America nor the PGA Tour would say.

Reports estimate the 15-year NBC television deal renewal, which kicked off in 2015, to be worth $440 million. So let’s do the math: 20 percent of that figure is $88 million. Eight Ryder Cups will be contested in that 15-year period, bringing the biannual distribution to the PGA Tour to roughly $11 million.

When the event is played in the United States, the PGA of America owns the rights to the events and takes the majority of the profits (just under 84%, with just over 16% going to the DP World Tour). When the Ryder Cup is played in Europe the DP World Tour claims 60% of the profits.

Everyone was fine with it until Xander and Cantlay got involved. They then put it to a vote and kept it out to eliminate the controversy.

USA big-hitters David Duval, Tiger Woods, Mark O’Meara, and Phil Mickelson all questioned where the reported $23 million net profit from the event went, with some reportedly frustrated they didn’t get paid despite countless “corporate” requirements throughout the week.

Speaking at the time, Woods said: “I would like to see us receive whatever the amount is – 200, 300, 400, 500,000 dollars, whatever it is – and I think we should be able to keep the money and do whatever we see fit.

Personally, I would donate all of it to charity. But I think it’s up to the other person’s discretion what they would do with it.

With all the money that’s being made, I think that we should have a say in where it goes.”

While there was talk that players could boycott the event (claims that were later played down), an agreement was reached following discussions. While the rules meant that the players weren’t entitled to any of the cash, a deal was made to allow the US team to have a say on the donations.

Where does the Netflix money go?

Netflix is not paying any fees to players, the PGA Tour, PGA of America or the Ryder Cup, with all those concerned believing that the exposure will more than compensate them in the future.

Donate all net proceeds to charity.

The players get $200k donated to the charity of their choice. The remainder of funds go into operating costs ( which I presume are like major bowl game ... Everyone travels and in style) but then funds are also put into player retirement funds. I believe that's what I read the other day

I would ok with players getting 50k or so in expense account to go towards offsetting their traveling circus of swing coaches, mental coaches etc players shouldn't be paid ( outside of charity) but shouldn't have to pay for the coaches at an event where there isn't a chance to make money

Dude

The PGA tour gets 20% of the media rights. They take 100% of that 20% and distribute it to the players retirement. They take nothing

Is this why Xander was the only player that didn't place his hand over his heart during the National Anthem? Or just forgetful?

Either way it was a bad look when you are representing the USA.

Not sure if mentioned earlier, but surely all player endorsement deals have incentives for making the Ryder Cup

That is a quite an assumption, especially considering there are no sponsor logos at the Ryder cup. Doesn’t change the fact that the PGA is making a ton of money of the players and all the players get is a charitable donation, which is also likely to help the PGA keep their non-profit tax exempt status

you didn't answer my question...where does the other 80% go? Do you even know how all the profit is being distributed (outside of the 20% that goes to some PGA retirement account)?
