Headed to San Francisco mid October and looking to catch a couple golf rounds. Looking for any and all recommendations. Have read mixed reviews on Half Moon Bay as well as TPC Harding Park. I do see the 2020 PGA will be held at Harding Park so I would imagine this track being in top shape. Are these the two must play tracks in the area? Or are there some hidden gems that I should look into as well. Most likely will have one early afternoon round and then will have an early morning round. Looking to stay within an hour of downtown San Francisco. Thanks in advance.

Pasa tiempo

It's an hour and half but it's Alistair McKenzie's second best course in the US behind ANGC

Played Half Moon Bay and Pasatiempo 2 weeks ago. Pasatiemop is an incredible course but very tough. Be prepared for a long day. Half Moon Bay has 2 great courses. Pretty nice and the views are awesome. 18 on the Old Course is the best hole I have ever played.

Couldn't disagree more. Pasa Tiempo is the scale Gawd.

Eta: and the fact you call it "some muni" indicates you don't know much about it.

Yea number 12 versus number 106, you are the idiot who don’t much about anything, especially golf.

Those rankings are so convoluted, I dont really give them much weight. Crystal Downs doesn't have near as much of a dramatic scale as Pasa, but it's obviously a good course.

Why do you think Downs is better? I gave you my reasoning, what's yours other than it's rating that makes you think it's better?

Well, his best US design is probably Cypress Point, then Augusta, then Crystal Downs.... Nonetheless, Pasatiempo is an absolutely incredible golf course. We’re it private and “exclusive” it would be ranked a lot higher than where it is. I have it as the second best I’ve ever played and it’s probably architecturally better than my first best.

I honestly don’t think it’s that tough other than the greens. I shot an 82 there with only one double.

Well worth extending your radius from San Fran. It’s definitely where I’d play in that area if I weren’t gonna do Pebble.

I just love the bunkering and scale at Pasa, and you're right because it's semi private it doesn't rank is high as it should. It's of course subjective and there's no right answer, but I just think Pasa is better than Crystal Downs. Cypress is an arguement where you could convince me.

Did Half Moon then on to Pebble last August! Great trip. Played both Half Moon courses. First time I ever wore a sweater in August to play golf!

Thanks for all the recommendations. Pasatiempo looks very temping and I may make that happen on my full day off. I do plan on staying closer to town on my afternoon round. If you could only play one course at Half Moon Bay, which course would you choose?

Sweater in August?? Not typical for my rounds in August here in MS.

Assuming October will be quite chilly as well?

I don’t get the PGA’s love for Harding Park. It’s good for a city owned course, but it should be considering the money they sink in to it. Just within 2-3 miles of it, Olympic, SF GC, and Cal Club are all much better tracks.

One of the coolest things about Harding Park is you can look across Lake Merced and see how the Lake course at Olympic is stacked up on the side of a huge hill. It’s hard to get the scale of the elevation change when you’re actually playing Olympic.

Pasatiempo is a really fun course and probably the closest you’ll ever get to putting on Augusta's greens. That said, over development on the front 9 and some quirks like the forced rows of trees between 6, 7, and 8 (added later on to protect people from getting hit by errant shots) take away some of it’s original luster.

If you can drive a bit, but can’t make it all the way to Pasatiempo, check out Cinnabar Hills in San Jose. It’s a severely underrated course.

Olympic will be hosting a PGA. Cal Club and SFGC don’t have the infrastructure, and the membership doesn’t want an event at their course. It took a long time for Lake Merced to agree to an LPGA event after being asked for years

Harding Park doesn’t really have the infrastructure either. It’s a bit of a cluster when they host events.

It came off that way, but I wasn’t suggesting SF GC or Cal club host a PGA event, merely pointing out that Harding Park is overshadowed by several other far better courses just within a small radius. If it wasn’t a TPC course, it wouldn’t host these events.

I remember Cal Club being just as long, if not longer than HP and Olympic. Cal Club has some room to lengthen a couple holes too if they wanted, though they’re happy as is.

I’m a huge fan of CC.
