OK. Does this course have the most ridiculous greens you’ve ever played, or what?

Azalea City in Mobile redid their greens about 15-20 years ago. They were tabletop sloped from front to back. If you were above the hole there was no stopping it unless it went in. They aren’t bad anymore after they’ve grown in and the course hasn’t been as well kept.

Only ones more difficult than UClub that I’ve played on.

Played lots of courses around Mobile/Pcola. Never that one. If it’s worse than UClub, I never will.

The 1 time I played Peninsula in Gulf Shkres, the greens were super slick. Maybe not as bad as Uclub, but it was a rough day.

Oh, they’re fine now. Just the first few years after they reopened.

Yeah, there are a lot of courses with Bent Greens up north that laugh at this thread. If you’ve never putted on really good bent grass, you haven’t lived.

Good Bent greens in the right climate are deadly. If you are picking the right lines, you can putt lights out on fast bent greens because you are never making more than a tap in stroke. Conversely, on shagging Bermuda you are making a 10 foot stroke for a 3 foot putt.

They just taking some getting used to. Most people playing their first round out there don’t play enough break.

Right after the renovation, they had even more little knobs in the greens that had to be flattened out.

Played there today for the first time. My course has some pretty difficult greens, so I was expecting difficult; but I was still perplexed the whole day. Very difficult greens to putt. I'm trying to think of more difficult greens, but I can't right now.

#15 is ridiculous. I hit a 54 degree 8 feet from the hole, and by the time it stopped rolling, it was down by the water 10 feet below the green.

I play there once or twice a year and have never had an issue, I can see some holes (like 15) getting silly if you miss bad or get above the hole when they are like glass, but I don’t see all of the fuss over them that is repeatedly posted on here.

It’s meant to be tour-like. Fast, of course. But complexes where it all depends on the location of the flag. And I don’t mean that by what most Ams think: be above/below the hole. It’s more difficult than that. There are some hole locations where you need to land it off the green to get it close. The better you know he greens/spots, the better you’ll play. And there are no exceptions to that. I’m talking 7 or 8 strokes difference. A 10 hdcp who knows that course extremely well will outplay a 2 hdcp who's playing it for the first time. Imagine the course where it’s not just the greens where you need that kind of specific knowledge. Then add 2000 yards. That’s a major course setup.

It’s more than just that there. It’s tough around the greens for chips and everything with the undulations and different levels. If you aren’t used to that course or types like it you’ll struggle. But it’s not unfair or anything

I can definitely see this. I shot 80 today playing it for the first time (I'm a 3 hdcp). I hit it ok, but the margins for error are ridiculously slim. On 10, the pin was in the middle, and I got a little too much of a wedge and ended up on the top of the back ridge. There was no way to get that putt within 5 feet without making it. Didn't make a single putt outside of 8 feet. I was actually over reading the break mostly. I also felt like every shot demanded full concentration minus a couple of par 5 layups. It's hard to hit it out of play, but there's plenty of trouble in landing areas. Very well designed in that regard.

Course knowledge is a huge part of playing well there, no doubt. I'd love to see how I would do over time playing there.

It's hard to know where below the hole is when you're 160 out in the fairway and have never seen the place before.

It's definitely not unfair. It's a good test of golf. If you can play well there, you can play well most places.

15 green is a bitch. People that play there all the time say that too so no sweat there. That and 11 have the biggest penalties for a ball that started on the green, but in a collection area.

The collection area to the right of 17 behind that bunker is a PITA as well.

The now closed Emerald Hills(Toro Hills next to the now closed Hodges Gardens) used to hold the annual Lions Club Golf Trny. Number 17, par 3 uphill had a green that sloped from back to front. When trny time came the greens were cut low. Most greens are relatively flat with some two tiered. Sundays final rd., two day trny., they would put the pin front right about 10 feet on the green. If you were outside of gimmie length or longer above the hole and missed, off the green you went. It was a two man scramble trny. Buddy of mine had a two shot lead and four putted it to lose. I would purposely hit it short just to make par. It was so bad it would back up two or three groups on the tee.
