Gonna be making a quick trip and was thinking about playing golf near San Francisco or south.

Spend the time and money to go to the south end of Monterey Bay.

I definitely plan on doing that at some point but I’m not sure if I want to make that trip solo, would rather wait till I have a group going. It’s also a long drive to Napa from there.

Napa has no real good public golf courses at all. The best semi-private is Silverado where they play a pga event in October. You have to stay at the resort though to get access, so if you are staying there, definitely play it.

Have played both Half Moon Bay courses on multiple occasions. I really enjoy the Ocean course and the last three holes are right on the water - Pebble like, so you will really enjoy it. Won’t go wrong there.

Thanks. I’ve never been down to Pebble so a part of me wants to do that but it sounds like Half Moon Bay would be a great substitute.

Yes, nothing beats golf on the Monterey Peninsula, but the Half Moon Bay courses are a decent substitute if you don’t want to drive all the way down there.

Ive played Silverado and both courses at Half Moon and I'd recommend them both as the above posters have said. Ill give you a couple others:

(1) Harding Park TPC - nice course and in SF itself

(2) Bodega Bay - relatively cheap as I've seen it for $30 on Golfnow. Very cool views from the top down into the Bay and the Pacific. Its a bit of a ride though from SF... about 60-70 miles.

Thought Silverado burnt down in the fires.

Also, head to Santa Cruz and play Alister’s favorite course he designed LINK

We decided to venture a little further south and are now looking at Pebble, Spyglass, and Pasatiempo.

Skip Spyglass. The first four holes are awesome, then it goes through the forest and gets pretty redundant. I didn't think it was worth the $400+. If time permits, drive down to Pebble and have breakfast at the lodge. Then drive back up 17 mile Dr., go to Pasatiempo and play there.

I don't know why Spanish Bay does not get more love. Most every hole is right on the Ocean and in great shape. Yes, it can be tough, especially if the wind is blowing, but the views and walk are amazing.

Plus on the few inland holes, there are always deer walking around to watch you play.

And the twilight rate, when the course is always virtually empty and you can get in 18 if you move, is like $150. Or if you get the Duke's club card before you go, is only $75.

Not sure how far south you want to go, but...

Pasatiempo’s greens may be the closest you’ll ever get to putting on the greens at Augusta. It’s a fun track, but the houses right on top of the course ruin some of it.

Cinnabar Hills is an underrated course down in San Jose. No views of the coast, but great terrain wrapping through canyons and lakes.

I was underwhelmed by Harding Park, but that may be because I played Olympic the day before. There was a good stretch of 3-4 holes to finish the back side, but the rest wasn’t very memorable.

A little outside of San Francisco, but the only time I was out there I played Cinnabar Hills and I remember liking it. But that was like 20 years ago and I don't remember anything about the course.

If you ever make it down to the Monterey Bay area, play Pacific Grove municipal course. Great views of the ocean and reasonable fees. In SF proper we like Lincoln and Harding.
