Reciprocity vs. Vacation Play

Let's discuss the mythical agreement of reciprocity in the golf world.
Based on light research, the reciprocal agreement can be explicit between clubs or via mutual connections between club pros. The agreement can vary between comped play to full price fees. However, knowing if your club has any reciprocal agreements isn't as straight forward as it may seem. In my experience, my home club pro will request I reach out for tee times with the message that he's available to verify membership or agreement if necessary.
I am relatively new to the private golf world and get the feeling there's unspoken etiquette or things I'm just supposed to know about this mythical token to play private clubs elsewhere. It appears there are add-ons to memberships to expand that option but it's not marketed very well or clearly offered at our club.
Anyone have knowledge to share? Of course I would never call up Augusta and ask to get on but what about something like Piper Glen in Charlotte or Druid Hills in Georgia? Is it the old adage that all they can say is no, or are there obvious signs and information I should be looking for before trying to get on privates away from home?

It’s more standard to have your club’s golf professional reach out to the private club you’re wanting to play to inquire. I’ve never seen it to where a member of a club reaches out to another club themselves to inquire of the possibilities of a reciprocal agreement.

I've always had pro's that will reach out to the other club on my behalf. I might give a "nice to have" tee time range, but generally fine with whatever I can get.

Ask your club pro - they’ll usually reach out and get a time.

Yea I thought it was odd that my pro always asked me to make initial contact. This confirms it. Guess he's either lazy or is politely letting me know the course I'm requesting is out of our league. Is there a way to know if certain courses are out of the question or is it always worth a try? I'll try the TG app. Thanks!

cousin was a pro at in tourist town. He had pretty good pull cause he had a lot more incoming calls than requests from members

Depends on the standing of your course and specifically the pro more than anything. And beyond that your relationship with the pro. Do they know you, do they trust you, do they think positively of you.

I can tell you that they do allow for reciprocal access. I called the pro shop, they said have your pro call. I gave my pro all of the information (date, time range). Pros took care of everything. I paid a green fee (I assume it was their guest fee). I was paired with 3 members and had an absolute blast.

It has to be pro to pro if you want to play better courses. Either become good friends with your club pro or buy a bunch of lessons and merchandise off of him so he’ll do you some favors. As others mentioned, it helps to be at a more prominent club and have a pro that is well connected.
I have played several super private clubs on reciprocals thanks to a friend in Philly that is a member at Merion. When visiting, we typically have to play during the week and sometimes with one of the pros. Payment can vary, but several times we did Venmo or cash to the pro and he probably pocketed all of it.

Did thousand greens with my younger daughter in 2021 in Oklahoma City - and it was such a good match the member and I are still friends and I hosted him on a trip to DC and I just saw him as my other daughter was at the usga 4 ball in OKC… it’s a good match as they pair you with like clubs across the country…
