Saudi approached the PGA about a partnership, and they said the negative press would be too much. They then hashed a plan to start a rival league, and told Saudi to speak to Greg Norman, he will do anything. Drum up drama and run for 1-2 years before a merger will be announced as a cloak for taking the Saudi money without it seeming like that but in the interest of protecting the game and making sure the best players in the world on all on the same stage.

Thoughts...

Not as far fetched as you might think.

Monahan used Rory as a pawn in his chess game.

Not a wild conspiracy theory. But help me understand—what’s wrong with Saudi money again? Why is it worse than say Chinese money?

Dude, I'm with you... But I believe the PGA Tour cited human rights violations, murdered journalists, terrorism support, gender inequality etc

Honestly makes sense, but you're giving human beings way too much credit...

Either too many people to keep it quiet, or too many people got fricked over for this to be the case. If guys that didn't go to LIV (Rory, Tiger, Morikawa, Thomas, Fowler, etc. etc.) got paid under the table to be in on this, it would never stay quiet. If they didn't, a guy like Monahan (among others) had the stones to frick over Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy like that by asking them to turn down hundreds of millions when it was all a ruse. People would be going to jail if this ever got out.

Not a soul knew this merger was coming until this morning. Well, except Phil.

Phil: "I know some things others don't"

The talks between the two sides were so tightly held that LIV chief executive Greg Norman was informed of the development in a conference call shortly before Monahan and Al-Rumayyan recorded an interview talking about it. Players and sponsors also weren’t consulted on the deal for confidentiality reasons, a person familiar with the matter said.

I have an easier time thinking the Saudis had enough money, connections and power to dig up dirt on PGA figureheads. That dirt was leveraged to force the merger.

Basically, we can leak this info and ruin you OR you can help our efforts, keep your nose clean and get PAID.

I would make Phil crawl across a pile of broken glass before I would let him back in.

He is a year or two from being a non factor anyway.

If this were actually the case the PGA wouldn't have been the ones leading the "blood money" campaign. They wouldve talked negatively about LIV but wouldn't have gone that far if the plan was to always merge and take that 'blood money'
