Northshore Membership

I am looking to become a member somewhere and I just wanted to get some opinions on some local Northshore clubs and any positives/negatives of each in my surrounding area that I may not be thinking of. Some background info, I am in my early 30s with a family and live very close to Oak Knoll. I play at least one round a week and used to be a member at Carter for 5 or so years before they decided they wanted to be a Florida resort course lol. I have been weighing a few options regarding membership and each have some downsides with most of them being the length of drive.
1. Oak knoll. Obviously cheap and very close but their greens are awful and I am really not sure how the renovation is going to look by this time next year. Not really private, only a small handful of member golf events. 10 minutes from my house which makes for a few mid week rounds. It's also just a short course, tipped out around 6,000 which isn't great.
2. Greystone. Leaning this option as it's pretty cheap but a 45 minute drive one way. Give priority booking for members, seems to have a good balance of younger/older crowd and they do a ton of member tournaments/events. Course is great but semi private.
3. Beau Chene. Another good option with a similar drive, benefit of being fully private and two courses. Really have no info on how the course looks now a days as it's been over a year since I have played there. Also not sure how the member culture is there and if they do a lot of member events.
4. Money Hill. Cheap for my age bracket but is in the middle of no where. 50 minutes from my house so pretty similar drive as the others. Have never actually played the course but hear it's great.
5. Carter. Great course but they really have no interest in being rewarding for being a member. Just packing the tee sheet.
6. Tchefuncta. Expensive compared to the other options but real convenient location, 30 minutes from my house and right off the interstate. Have no idea what the member life is like there and also have never played a round out there to know how the golf is.
Look forward to seeing any and all info yall may have to help with a possible decision. I do play tennis but not a main concern as I play at North Cypress a lot. Leaning Greystone or Beau Chene given everything above but some outside opinions always appreciated.
Side note: bonus for good Friday games. I am off on Fridays and always easy for me to get a round in so a big plus would be skins games etc on Friday mornings.

There are generally two tournaments a month for members, one club event and one MGA (Mens Golf Association - optional join for like $125/year). Oak is in really good shape right now (fairways and greens) but the bunkers there suck, really really bad (on both courses). Some are good and some are awful. Drainage is terrible and they have side walls so the crew takes all the sand from the middle of the bunker and pushes it to the walls and you're left with clay, rocks and even exposed plastic covering on the bottom for mid day rounds in alot of them.
That being said, a very diverse membership base, great for families, easy to find casual groups, gambling groups, morning groups, afternoon groups.
They can have alot of outside tournaments there so sometimes it is a PIA to get a tee time and sometimes even both courses are closed but pace of play is fantastic (3.5 hours for a foursome).
TONS of OB and the white stakes are on the golf course side of the ditches between the homes and the course rather than the homeowners side so in quite a few instances, if you miss a green pin high and you're 2' off the green, you could kick OB.
Oak is less forgiving off the tee than Mag and I think the layout of Mag is better.
Costs are generally low up front but they nickel and dime the hell out of you charing extra for the driving range plan, it's like $20 for a 9 hole cart. On course food is essentially non existent so don't expect a turkey or chicken salad sandwich sandwich if you're hungry BUT the bar and grill for after play is nice and they have a good happy hour.
If comparing Gresytone and BC I would put it like this:
Beau Chene has 36 holes as opposed to 18 and is the winner with course variety and it helps with pace of play. They also are a better option for fitness, tennis, pickleball, youth swim team, evening events like steak night, bingos, bourbon nights, fireworks and holiday parties. It's more of a "traditional" old course feel with alot of protected elevated greens, oak trees, scenic water, etc.
Greystone will more focus on golf and is more "modern" in terms of design (rolling fairways in places), its longer and it's usually more "consistent" with conditions but that's much of a byproduct of having to maintain one course rather than two.

Friday afternoons are BIG at beau chene, bigger than Saturdays and Sundays in most instances. The mornings are generally for the older golfers but mid mornings, early afternoon into the afternoon you can generally find 3-4 games of 2-4 groupings all playing different games.

I grew up playing Beau Chene. Will probably join there myself in the next year or so. The big plus with Beau Chene is the 36 holes. Allows you to change it up but also normally means even if there is a big charity tournament going on you can still play.
I like Money Hill it is just too far away for me to really consider it.
Nothing against Tchefuncta but its just not worth it to me over Beau Chene. Its actually closer for me but still just not worth it. Especially if you are looking for random games and member events BC would probably be the play.
I havent been out to Greystone or Oak Knoll in years so nothing to offer there.

I went to a wedding at beau Chene recently and really liked the look of the practice area lit up at night.
Id join that place in a second if I didn’t live n the barren wasteland of golf hating Baton Rouge.

I'd probably join Carter again if I were you, but it sounds like you're against that. It's a great course and is close to you. I don't think I could bring myself to be a member at a place that was 45+ minutes away.

Thanks, very insightful and definitely makes me open up more towards Beau Chene. The aspect of it being fully private outside of tournaments makes it much more appealing along with pretty active games on the weekends. Luckily I have a sim at my house so no real need for driving range access although those launch monitor stations are sweet out there.

Love the course and location. Just feels like they want nothing to do with having members, they pivoted to a "play pass" now where its just discounted rounds if you buy a package. No member member, member guest, 4 balls, etc. Just really unfortunate because the course is awesome.

Best bang for your buck is Oak Knoll. Cheap option to join now during renovation timeframe as rates will rise after renovation.

I could not see myself considering membership anywhere further than 30 minutes away and even that is pushing it.
Their greens were awful.... now they're doing a greens renovation... this is a good thing, not a bad thing.
Oak Knoll has a pool and seems to cater to families. My problem with the golf course at the moment is they seem to attract a largely clueless public golf crowd with zero etiquette. They really need to enforce a dress code and get some marshals out there.

Carter started an MGA this year. It’s still in the “testing phase” so no entry cost this year but so far it’s been successful. They open the course to the MGA on maintenance day (Tuesday) once a month and have several other tournaments planned and played to date.

They did a green renovation quite a few years back and it didn't end well. Hoping for a different outcome this time definitely, I play out there a good bit still. Do wish they had some room to move the tee boxes back as 6000 yards from the tips is meh. Crowd is definitely awful, not sure if it's the reduced rates with the temp greens out there or what.

I will have to check it out if that is the case. Appears they may be back on the right path.

Just because it's cheap doesnt mean it's the best bang for the buck, it just means it's cheap.
