Yes. Still a nice course but not as nice as it used to be since it's a state course and Louisiana is a broke shithole. They are currently removing the fairway bunkers so it's got some construction going on. But getting those bunkers out of there should end up being a good thing.

Black Bear had way too many fairway bunkers in the original design. There was no way the course could spend the money necessary to maintain those bunkers. It will be interesting to see how the removal affects the look of the course and how it will play.

Because apparently bunkers are the most labor intensive part of course maintenance and they did not account for that when they put 8 million fairway bunkers in the original design. They were too costly and they quit maintaining them a few years ago. Since then you have played them as GUR.

I was fortunate enough to get to visit many of the bunkers before they replaced.

Having worked at Audubon during summers while I was at LSU I can attest to this, people dont realize the work it takes to get a bunker leveled, raked, and pie crusted. If it rains heavily this is an all day thing for the whole staff, sometimes two days. And this was at Audubon a small executive course.

With the amount of rain we get in LA maintaining bunkers is a major time sink for a maintenance staff.

A lot of people think its just a dude that goes in there with the machine and fluffs it up but thats bull shite, correctly maintained bunkers are all done by hand and its a royal pain in the arse.

Eh, those machines do a good job. You should only have to rake a couple feet into the bunker

And sand has gone up in price bigly since most courses were designed/built. Both the cost of sand and the cost to truck/deliver it to the course. While rates being charged has been pushed down by having too many courses and Golf Now exposing the oversupply.

You talking wet sand? They work as well as the rake

I spent many an hour atop one of those machines

It also depends on the shape and angle of your bunkers

Squire Creek is the best private golf course in Louisiana....there is no arguing that.

I’ll take English Turn for best public access course but there are several choices.

First 3 holes next to the bayou are nice - after that it is just a very old school golf course. As the previous poster stated, nothing spectacular to write home about. They run things very old school out there.

Bellview Golf Course in Franklin is the best public course in the state. Probably the gulf coast.
