Bought my dad red matte golf balls so he can see with his 70 year old eyes. He claims they "feel" different when hits. Doesn't necessarily say he disliked it just different. I told him he was full of shite but figure would ask golf board if they can feel difference?

They seem to roll different to me.

I have not done experiments. I’m sure there is data somewhere.

I’ll link if I find something.

Won’t use them. When you putt, the ball’s finish grabs and resists the initial skid/roll. I am convinced it affects putting distance control.

Look cool though

Interesting. I wonder if TXG, mark crossfield, or even my golf spy have tested this.

I'm pretty sure i remember seeing a MyGolfSpy study on how moisture affects performance and matte balls did not hold up well at all in that study. But that was just for wet conditions/

I'll look for it and see if I can provide a link.

What's he playing now and what's he used to playing?

Compression rating could be a lot different which would would cause a different feel regardless of color.

I played some titleist velocity balls that were matte green and they were very "clicky" compared to something like a srixon, snell, callaway, TP5, PV1. That ball is also really hard though.

He usually plays Callaway l super soft and I got him titleist true feel. I ordered him some Callaway super soft for real comparison

We will see- with eye issues and age just trying to help the old man see his ball so he doesn't pick his head up in swing lol

I like the matte finish. I use the callaway's bright yellow matte. I dont like the glossy ones, but to each his own.

Yeah, I've had some friends play them, and they say they feel like hitting rocks. I've never hit one before.

They must have to feel different since they are not multi-layered right?

This is what I experienced, but I can’t find an article about it. Manufacturers control many of the “sources” so they may be reluctant to literally write, “hard to gauge putting distance with the matte finish.”
