Its hard to call this an upstart when they paid a ton of money for some of the biggest names in golf over the last 20 years.

This isn't the XFL that is pulling together a bunch of undrafted D2 players. They have 12 major winners on the LIV tour.

It's more comparable to the original USFL that took legit NFL talent away.

For the month of January, PGA only averaged something like 2 million total viewers over 4 days.

This is 3.2 million over 3 days. Seems pretty good for an event nobody knew about on a channel that doesn't carry sports.

Apples and Oranges

For a similar comparison, here is the avg viewers for both.

"LIV’s average audience at 289,000 vs. the Tour’s at 2.42 million"

What did the tour average off of NBC(i.e. on golf channel)?

Something around 593k?
290 vs 590 is a lot different than 290k vs 2M

It's the avg viewers for Sunday for both.

And its not like the Honda Classic was a stacked field.

Regardless of the avg number… comparing viewers from the CW to NBC is not a valid comparison for a number of reasons.

Comparing the CW numbers to Golf Channel is a little more relatable

If you expected an upstart golf league on CW to beat out the PGA on CBS/NBC, then that’s on you.

LIV didn’t create their brand / league to be called upstart and not beat out the PGA.

The longer this goes the less chance LIV has of overtaking the PGA. It needed to happen overnight when it was the most popular. Now the PGA has had time to react and is keeping the top golfers. People just don’t care about LIV.

Our first weekend of live coverage for the 2023 LIV Golf season exceeded expectations,” said Will Staeger, LIV Golf’s Chief Media Officer. “It represented the LIV Golf League’s debut on The CW, The CW App, and the weekend’s highest downloaded free sports app, LIV Golf Plus. LIV has diversified its consumption model, tailoring our distribution to the way viewers consume their content – and these numbers reflect the new ways that sports are watched. This is a long-term game of growing our viewership, but we are delighted with our start in the US and extremely encouraged by our global engagement.

Don’t act like this news about designated events for top 50 players won’t change things & if/when LIV gets OWGR there could be another big movement

I can promise you I’m never going to sit down on a Friday or Saturday and tune into a LIV event
