Iron lofts changing through the years

Is there any particular reason why lofts have decreased?
My early 2000s lofts are 2-3 degrees more than current 2018 models.
For instance, a 7 iron was 34 degrees then and is usually 31 degrees now.

Is it just to pursuade customers that the irons perform better because they can hit a 7 iron 10 yards farther than their old clubs?

Does it affect any aspect of the game?
Or... Has the 3 iron just been replaced by the new 4 iron loft and made golfers add an extra wedge?

Because the current irons would launch the ball too high at older lofts

Like iheartlsu said, with thinner faces and weight moving lower and around the face, the ball launches higher "needing" a stronger loft and less spin generally.

That being said, it's slightly comical when people these days compare distances based on the iron number. I have the srixon 765s. Players irons but still slightly stronger than traditional lofts on blades. I still get asked sometimes what club I hit as if it'll help with another person's club selection. Unless you play with me often and know my numbers, that info means shite.

I play blades and find this hilarious.

200 yards

What you hitting?
5 iron...
Hmmm I've got a 7.
Great?

The only time that question matters anymore is if you know someone’s game. The real question should be, did you club up or not?

Its also companies tricking amateur golfers into thinking that they are hitting the ball farther.

Half of it is a marketing gimmick.

I don't really agree. With the new ball especially (and club technology), lofts needed to be adjusted to get the same flight patterns. The two options would be deloft the irons, or a 7 iron in your modern set would hit a completely different shot than the 7 iron in your older set. Ease of use would lead companies to choose the former.

But I'm not disagreeing that people thinking they hit the ball further helps them sell clubs.

This has really amused me in the past.
I'm hitting a 4 iron, they're hitting a 7.
I think, what's the point? You're just forced to take 2 extra wedges than me or risk not having great distance precision with the short irons.
Neither is a great situation, but the short, scoring irons are way more important than winning the iron distance, dick measuring contest.

I always answer this question with a yardage...

What club did you hit??

I hit my 155 yd club... doesn't matter if that was a 155 PW with a strong wind at my back or an 8 iron with the wind in my face I am trying to hit the ball to a yardage so I convey my intent based on that.

This, its what the guys I play with ask as everyone's distances vary greatly. You need to know your own club yardages. In hindsight, I really like when Ben Hogan just put lofts on clubs. In today's world of club fitting, it would almost make sense to put the distant on a person's clubs for their standard full shot with each. But, that ignores different shots that are actually necessary to play the game on the course.

So that club companies could say they have the longest irons

My clubs in playing now launch so much higher than the clubs of 15 years ago. If my 7 iron was same loft as old set it would enter orbit.

Had to retrain my eye where to look after starting playing again after 12 off recently.
