In college golf, how big is the home course advantage?

If you look at LSU this week, not very much.

We only beat two teams at our invitational this weekend, La Tech and Alabama who was ahead of us but did not finish.

I know we are down, but I was thinking playing at home would help some.

I would think the only advantage would be on the greens. But sometimes in golf what you don’t know can be valuable. If you don’t know how dangerous a shot can be, sometimes you hit a good shot. But LSU should be able to read putts better than Team X or Team Y coming to UClub

Putting would definitely be to our advantage, but there has to be an advantage of knowing how to play a hole. An advantage of knowing what various pin placements bring also. Knowing where to miss and where not to go is also big.

It certainly seemed like it when LSU had to play Oregon in Eugene back in 2016. Ranked as a 3 seed and get knocked out. If I remember, Aaron Wise was the Duck's star and won individual medal.

No doubt. I should have said the main advantage not the “only”.

LA Tech's best finish almost every year is at their home event. Depending on the course is how big of an advantage a team has at their home event. U Club is hard, but it's mostly out in front of you so LSU has less of a home field advantage than Tech at Squire. Oregon probably has a pretty big advantage especially against teams from the Southeast because of course conditions.

Juat depends really.

Course knowledge is very important. Knowing exactly where you need to miss, etc.

Another big advantage is being able to sleep in your own bed, have normal routine, etc.

There is definitely an advantage. How much probably depends on the course like someone said. Knowing the greens is one of the big advantages, especially when it comes to grain. Overall just having a comfort level with the course. Playing it almost every day allows you to know all of the the ins and outs: Knowing the shots you can or shouldn’t gamble on; where or where not to miss shots etc. Its funny that y’all are mentioning Tech. I played there in the mid to late 90’s and those were the things that came to mind. That was pre-Squire Creek. We played at Pine Hills in Calhoun then. Another advantage there was knowing which irons to hit on the par 3’s which were long and had a decent amount of slope to them. Sadly Pine Hills is no longer open.

Southeastern won the Southland Conference tournament at Carter when I was in college. They spent an hour or two every morning before class putting to various hole locations.

They knew the pin locations a week or two before the tournament and just threw a headcover down and putted to it from all over.

Won by like 18 shots.

LaTech had the T3 best round of the tournament with their 2nd day 289....

....and finished 27 shots behind next to last LSU.

That will leave a mark.

And what happened to Bama?

Bama didn’t finish is what the scoreboard said.
I don’t know if it was Covid or something else.

I was disappointed we didn’t do better It us our home course.
We won the NC and now it looks to me that the coach is going trough the motions.

They only had 4 players due to a back injury, and one of the 4 signed an incorrect scorecard so they got DQ'd since they only had 3 counting scores.

I played a few college tourneys at Pine Hills. I remember the long par 3’s. Played for UNO in the mid to late 90’s.

College golf is rough - and recruiting is a crapshoot. Texas, Stanford, Oklahoma State, Georgia, Illinois, Arizona St etc. get the AJGA Rolex east west studs....the top 1-2 percent of high schoolers. After that is a huge guessing game.

I have seen 8th graders beat D1signees at southern juniors and AJGA events.

It was when I was in school, but you still have to play well.
