Joining some friends at a lake house this weekend. We are playing a course nearby Sunday morning. 7:30 am tee time. I suck arse. I probably play two times I year, I enjoy going out and enjoying the scenery and crushing white cans. I don’t give a shite if I lose 14 balls.

Here’s my dilemma… should I tell these guys beforehand that I awful at golf just as a courtesy or should I just let them find out for themselves?

Well, you've got the basics down. When I was even worse than I am now, I'd let my folks know it. Then I committed to giving not more than a cursory look for lost balls and taking a drop wherever my partner was.

If you have a good attitude and don't slow the play, you're better for a foursome than many, many others.

Yep, just play fast and pick up when you may hold the group up and you’ll be golden

Play fast, pick up and take gentlemen’s triples.

If none of them are serious golfers I wouldn’t sweat it. Play fast like others said and just laugh off the bad shots

Sounds like a vacation round so everyone should be relatively chill about it

I don’t mind playing with hackers as long as they play fast

Also if you want to at least minimize how much you suck go out and just make half swings. Beginners really don't understand how far a golf Ball will go with just a half swing and it's so much easier to put it straight.

I love to make fun of old men golf as much as the next guy but those guys with their half swings going 170 at a time kick my arse routinely.

Come to terms with the fact that you will only ever achieve sucking less.

Be honest.

Maybe they will play a scramble or shamble with you.

If not, pick up at 7. Tell them you play “7-up.”

Don’t get mad. Flag down beer cart. Empty cans.

They probably have played with novices or bad players before. I play with guys who are better than me. One time I was with a 5, a +2, and - +4.

I actually won a hole!
I just shot my 85 and picked up when I was out of the hole.

They like you. They don’t care what you shoot.

Wouldn't they already know?

Regardless, just tell them you're just out there to have some fun. Then when you start sucking, just laugh it off and don't let it get in your ahead and prevent you from having a good time.

One of the best playing partners to have!! Give em a heads up but most of the time I’d rather play fun rounds with that guy than a dude grinding every shot for and 80

I rather play with a hacker that moves than low handicap that’s slow

One practice swing is fine anything more if your a beginner won’t make a difference.

Played with a “novice” today.

We were casual.

I encouraged him to hit another drive if he was out of play, since it was not crowded.

He hit some good shots. He had fun.

I played ok. Shot 42. I’m not sure what he shot, but he thanked me several times for joining him. He had never played our course. I know him from work and pickleball. Nice man. He was reluctant to join our group for golf because he’s new to the game. I told him, “nobody cares what you shoot. Just keep up and try your best. Pick up at 7 and enjoy the day.”

He will get better quickly. He’s taking lessons. Looks like a good grip and setup to my eye. He has a good swing with decent speed. He hit past me every time he made square contact.

I think he will stick with it, and get better. Time will tell. I look forward to walking 9 with him again soon.
