How far are we from Astro turf fairways and greens?

Seems like the best option to keep courses in imaculate conditions all the time. Esp with golf declining, courses closing, and affordable courses being hit or miss with conditions.

quote:There would still be upkeep and rough to manage and cut which could still keep COP not to mention the scale involved with that size of install and drainage needs. I could see it happening to greens and tee boxes only but not all the fairways.

How in the hell would you get a ball to check, spin on that? Also, how far do you think it would roll out after it hits the fairway.

No way that ever happens. I played a course in the UK where there was a tee box that was astroturf, and I thought it was the most booty thing ever. If you play St. Andrews during the winter, you have to carry a small astroturf mat with you to hit shots from the fairway. That's not golf.

I can't imagine home much it would cost to lay astroturf on an entire golf course. It's expensive enough for high schools to make the decision to go astroturf on a 120+ yard feild. Eventually, the move does pay off. I don't think that would ever be the case in golf.

I have seen artificial greens.

I would refuse to play a turf course. That will never happen though.
