Golf Digest article about a country club promoting a hole in one giveaway but apparently not paying for the insurance to cover the payout should someone actually make it.

Someone is getting fired.

Either way. They are fricked. They will end up giving that man a truck plus his lawyer fees.

Well find out some nitty gritty and report back.

In my head, if the course had no agreement with the dealership, and were promoting the event via multiple FB posts, they’ll be liable for the truck. And based on the posts, it seems the course was pushing way more than the dealership, and just never imagined someone would actually hole out.

The story is hilarious. The guy doesn't really play, etc.

Downhill par 3, 200 yards, prob plays 180ish. Tiny green, slopes back to front and spongy. Anyway allegedly he hits it in the giant tree left of green, it falls down, bounces off trunk and in the damn hole.
He will get paid regardless.

Edit: 10th hole at Morrilton country club if you want to look it up

That’s crazy.

I’ve seen balls take some insane bounces and go in but never one off a tree.

It's difficult. You have to account for various compression rates depending on the species of tree and the time of the year.

Especially this time of year when cold fronts are coming in. You really need to check the barometric pressure in between shots.

According to reports, it was a good, clean ace. It didn’t happen on a provisional. It didn’t happen out of turn. A letter-of-the-law "one.

Everything in the course is considered in play unless marked otherwise. You'd literally have to have a local rule established that if you hit the tree its out of bounds, otherwise it's an ace.

Not to mention the ball marks on the green. I had a 5-iron spin about 20 feet dead left into the hole and the only thing we could figure out to make it act that strange was hit a ball mark that wasn’t fixed.

It is not clear from the article whether there were designated “witnesses” to watch the hole. I would be suspect of any prize offered over $2,500 if there were no witnesses present. But since this golfer does not play much, he may not know enough to be suspicious.

I’d also want to know if the truck was parked on the designated hole or if it was just at the clubhouse somewhere? If the Ford dealer brought it out and parked it near the tee box, then they knew what would be inferred by the player.

And what kind of signage was there about the contest?

We had an situation in McAllen, Tx where at McAllen Medical Center's annual foundation tournament they offered a new Mercedes 300D as a Hole-In-One prize. This was back in 1995 the signage said Prize for a Hole-In-One wins car....not 1st hole-in one. Well you guessed it within 3 groups going thru the par 3.. they had 2 Aces...1st ace is by a doctor ...2nd one is the Chairman of Board of McAllen State Bank ...could have gotten ugly cuz the insurance was for the 1st Hole-In_one....Hospital bought the Banker the nicest custom golf car made...even had a Mercedes hood ornament on front of cart.

There were apparently multiple FB posts advertising the truck. And the alleged winner specifically signed up for a chance to win the truck. And then he ends up making a hole in one bouncing off a tree.

Interesting…

Irrelevant to the hole in one.

The path to where a ball lies is irrelevant unless there is a designated ‘not in play’ object defined beforehand. This could be like a power line that crosses a fairway like at #9 at county club of Jackson. Hitting that means re-tee and first shot doesn’t count regardless of where it lies.

A tree, in or out of bounds, does not negate a shot.
