Lay it open, open the stance, make a thump/splash 1-4 inches behind the ball depending how far you want to hit it and let the sand toss it out. I see way too many with the face shut and trying to chip it out of the bunker, I see a lot of people short sided keep leaving it in the bunker, a putt for par is better than another sand shot for par, it takes practice and precision to get down the really tough bunker shots but for now practice on getting it out and somewhere on the green so you have a putt if you are struggling that bad.

Like downhill lie, minimal sand in bunker, 25' of green running away from you into water...and you can't putt it out because there's a lip?

Yep that's why I said the OP should focus on a one shot out of the bunker and atleast having a putt for something for the next shot.

I have always been really hit or miss but mostly miss out of the bunker. Kinda just quit on the proper form and what not and just scoop the ball out with a 58. For a hack like myself I just to avoid a really big number.

I am perfectly content with just getting out of the bunker. When I get out the bunker in one shot, I take that as a moral victory. I'll gladly take one shot out the sand two putt bogey or chip one putt bogey.

My major gripe these days is courses lack of attention to bunkers.

Yes - I know they're hazards and meant to punish the golfer for the errant shot. But a good number of even respectable courses are just letting them go.

Best $20 I ever spent was given to an old guy at the practice range one day who offered to help me with hitting out of bunkers for $20.

I won't give you he whole lesson but the 3 biggest keys for me

1. When you set up have an open stance, before you swing lift up your back foot so you're standing with all your weight on the front side, keep your weight there throughout

2. Always swing aggressively with a full follow through (like you are hitting a full wedge.

3. Use the amount of sand you take control your distance, i.e. If you want to hit it shorter hit further behind the ball.

Obviously this isn't perfect and the more you practice the better you'll be, but I get it out the bunker onto the green near everytime now. I even holed out for a sandie a few weeks ago

Lot of good tips here. Start with the open stance and open club face and add hands positioned in front of left thigh. Also , Gary Player says " strike the match ." Accelerate through the sand.

Follow that advice and your bunker up & downs will increase.

Ill also choke down a bit so that if I miss, its not way out of play. It makes me hit before the ball as well and not skull it to oblivion

Real quick, how does making the club effectively shorter help you not blade it?

Pretend there's a dollar in the sand and your ball is sitting on the middle of it.

Try to scoop (not literally) the dollar out without breaking it.

Imagine that when hitting a bunker shot.
