Help needed. Just starting golf

Hi, as the title states, I just started golf about two weeks ago and the guy at the driving range said that I look like "about an 8 handicap".
Does this mean that when I go to play on a course I can expect to score around 80? Shouldn't I be aiming for around 70 though?
How quickly can I expect to meet this goal and how quickly did it happen for you? Any tips are appreciated! Thanks!

It means you make good contact with the golf ball. But, as you will soon learn, the range isnt the golf course
Start with bogey golf and work from there

if you were a legit 8 handicap, which you're not, you should expect to shoot @ or < 80 once roughly once or twice every ten rounds.

Practice your short game twice as much as your range time. Figure out where your miss is and work it into managing the courses you play. Bogeys are not bad Dbl bogeys are . Chipping and putting is Paramount to anyone’s game. Practice practice practice . Your first goal should be to break 90 . And don’t let your score that day ruin an otherwise nice experience. Good luck

Not to disappoint you, but when you first start, you'll be in the 100's (assuming you play on a par 70-72 course). There's nothing wrong with that, that's how it is with everyone who starts. If you have a decent swing already and are making good contact and are committed to practicing, you'll probably make some good progress. But there are guys that have been playing golf 20+ years that don't shoot 80.

Nothing wrong with making that a goal, just don't expect it to come anytime soon. Just trying to be realistic with you here. I have a buddy who started last October and has been hard at it since then. Plays numerous times a week and actually plays in flighted tournaments. Practices on a simulator and plays the right way by not taking mulligans when he plays or improving his lie, actually counting his out of bounds shots/drops. So he has a very honest score, and he just broke 100 for the first time.
Don't neglect practicing your short game. That's where you will improve your score the most. A beginner can poke two shots up near the green on a par four, but then very easily take 5 shots to get it in from there. This will happen a lot, don't let that discourage you.
Golf is fun, regardless of your score. Well, most of the time. I would honesltly not worry about your score or even play on a course/count score for a while. Driving ranges are boring so you'll probably have an itch to get on a course fairly soon, but the best place for you right now is the range.

Golf isn’t easy. Take some lessons, then after that take some more lessons. Spend more money on lessons and less on the latest and greatest clubs. If you have those beginner sets that’s all hybrids for the irons, throw them away and get a legit set of game improvement irons. You might be making good contact but there’s a difference in making good contact and really swinging it the right way and getting the most out of your swing. Not just in regards to distance but you also need to spin the ball enough to hold greens and control your shots. Enjoy the journey.
I played golf on and off my whole life. I really dedicated myself about 15 years ago took a lot of lessons and practiced every day. Started to shoot in the upper 70’s after a couple of months, but I had also been playing my whole life just needed to learn how to really strike the ball the right way.

Your game is between you and the course. Play your game. If you are just starting, play from the forward tee box. You will enjoy it more and so will the people behind you. If you keep score properly, meaning you really count every stroke, count your penalties, count your gimmies etc. average golfers score @ 90. When I play I count every whiff, duff, 3 foot topper, every penalty stroke when I find water and out of bounds. I’m getting better, but I’m about a 100 golfer. Just go have fun.

You may never shoot 70. It’ll almost certainly be years before you break 80, if ever.
The range is designed to give you confidence because you aren’t hitting it in a pond, in the trees, etc.
Golf course design I think is only permitted to the most sadistic of Satan’s minions. Play a few rounds and at least once you’re going to want to kill the guy that thought a tree would look great right in front of where your ball ended up.

After we all become scratch golfers, which hobby should we take up next?
Bull riding? It’s a simple sport. Hold on for 8 seconds and keep the free hand off of the bull.
In the documentary, Happy Gilmore won money very quickly on the pro golf tour and was vying for the coveted gold jacket within weeks of when he started.
Good luck to everybody!

You started 2 weeks ago... you'd be lucky to break 80 on the front 9

Aiming and hitting ... Two very different things..

Depends on how much time, effort and practice you put into it.. and with that said you may never see 70's
I've played for the better part of 20 years.. I started out mainly as a way to get out the house every once and a while.. maybe 4-6 rounds a year.. and put a lot of snowmen on the score card.. decided a few years ago i wanted to get better and really focused on practicing and having a lesson here and there.. I've gone from in 4 years when someone asking what my handicap was replying with that I was handicap to now I can say I'm a single digit handicap...But I play at least 9 holes 3-4 times a week and a full round 1 to 2 times an weekend...
And as good as I've felt like I have gotten... I've only broken 80 a few times...

Please put down an alignment stick when at the range. So you know where you are aiming. I'm usually the only one with a club or stick down.

You really should be aiming to be in the 60s if you're going to be worth a shite at the game.

I am sorry to have had a random thought about trolling this board and to have followed through with it. Y'all are some good people

I grew up swinging the sticks and was a decent player from age 10 to 22 or so. Had talent and power, but just too many bad shots.
Anyway, after playing about once per year I hope to play 3-5 times this summer. 89 is a realistic goal.

If you play 3-5 times a year and break 90 that's not bad. Why don't you play more? Not that interested or not able to?
I play about once or twice a week. One day I'll shoot mid to high 70s and the next I'll be in the 90s. I have a hard time keeping it consistent and getting all parts of my game to line up. It's the dumbest sport and I want to play more often.
