Help me hit 5 and 6 irons

For those of you that struggled with the 5 and 6i's but now hit them well, what did you do? Any drills that can help?
My 6iron is less of a concern, but I still lack confidence with it most days. 5i just flat out sucks. This part of my bag is hurting my par 5 game.

Keep your fricking head down lol. These are long enough irons that it's tempting to open up to watch the beauty of your shot, but well, even though we all know we shouldn't it's really hard not to.
At a mechanical level, I have started rotating my left hand much earlier in the swing (so much so that the back of my left hand is facing the ball during the backswing.
Everyone is different, but that one change eliminated my slicing, improved my backswing rotational arc (thereby delivering more power and follow through upon impact), and generally relieved tension in my swing.
But again, everyone is different, and what th do I know, I shoot 83-92 on my own home course lol (relatively short, 6.3 - 6.8 hundred yards).
It's a difficult game.

I make it a point to try to keep my hands as low as possible and come way more from the inside.

For a lot of amateur golfers, there really no need for a 4 and 5 iron. Go with a UDI, hybrid, or fairway wood.
Its do that or put in a lot of work with those clubs. I know a lot of people, for whatever reason, start leaning back and trying to help lift the shot. Keep the wieght forward and hit down just like you do with your 7i.

First question is what is your shot shape like for them, and is it the same for your other irons?

I second this, if you don't hit the 5 iron well, get rid of it, there's too many options out there that can help you out. I'm a 7hc and use a 7 and 9 wood. The ball flies high in the air and stops on the green. my irons are 6-9 and the 4 wedges, 45, 50, 54, 58.
I can hit the 4 and 5 iron but I don't get the height on them to make them hit the green and stop, I do with the fairway woods. Give them or hybrids a try. I tried hybrids and I don't like the look of them at address, they are shaped funny and I don't have the confidence in them to hit them well.

This will be different for everyone but I can tell you what has helped me.
I focus on shortening my backswing, I basically think like I’m Jon Rahm or Tony Finau, short backswing and really hit down on it. My 7-5iron has become a strength for me with this.
I dk why it doesn’t work with my 4iron

1. Not standing too close 2. ensuring swing path is from the inside 3. Corrected lie angle have all helped me.
As others have mentioned about coming from the inside; for me if I don’t deliberately feel that, I will 100% hit it out to the right. Having a correct lie angle to your swing/setup is something to maybe investigate. Once I got mine corrected I became more consistent with 4 thru 6iron. I usually can get away with not coming far enough inside on shorter irons.

May play it a ball further forward in your stance vs 7-8iron. Slower back swing. If you have a swing flaw the longer club will expose it.

What’s your miss? Fat? Thin? Push? Pull?

Start by hitting shots choked down to the length of a gap wedge and hit 3/4 shots with them. Get comfortable, then start choking further up until you get the full swing.

I threw out my 3,4 5 irons and put in a 22* Hybrid and a 7 wood.
Best thing that I ever did.

Be careful with this one. You want to be pretty neutral on mid- to long-irons.

I went kind of a different direction just recently... I replaced the shaft in my 5i, went from a steel DG 120 to a Graphite Fujikura Axiom 105.. I feel like I get a little better tempo and speed without trying to force it and that allows me to square it up a little better...

Very true. I probably brought the club too far inside and always hooked my long irons.
Now I don't worry about it with a hybrid.

Absolutely bringing it back too far inside is one issue. That being said; I should have clarified that I'm referring to the feeling of coming from the inside on the thru swing instead of coming over the top too much.

Appreciate the replies and suggestions! Got a few that I'm going to try out. I actually think I may be coming from too far inside as my shots typically do that low trajectory descending duck hook. Ideal shot is just something that gets airborne and will cover 175 consistently. 7i (non power spec) carries about 162 with a draw. I have the Aerotech FC shafts in my irons and this may also be contributing to my 5 iron woes as the shaft in the longer irons is designed to get the ball in the air. It feels like it's got a different kickpoint.
I'd like to keep a 5 iron because when I do catch it pure (typically off of a tee on longer par 3's) it's a 190 yard club and deadly accurate. Just cant seem to replicate off the deck or in stressful moments.
Again, many thanks for all the suggestions.

I may introduce a hybrid 5 to my bag. No shame in swinging a hybrid 6 imo

Fred Couples has 6 headcovers and folks are out here hitting 2 irons.

Lots of comments, but until you know why it’s a problem fixing it will be unlikely.
What is different?
Is your miss the same, fade/pull/whatever the same as your 7 iron miss?
