Is first tee at Santa Maria legit?
My kids never did the program, but I’d say it’s worth it. I go out to the range a few times a week and see the kids out there. They break them out into groups and work on short game on the practice green, putting on the chipping green and full swing on the section of range reserved for lessons. They look like they have simple chipping and putting competitions to hold the kids’ attention. If nothing else, they are exposed to other kids their age that are interested in golf. If you want to go with private lessons, my daughter that’s on a high school team, started out taking lessons at Santa Maria with Jack Terry.

I’ve posted a lot about this - but since you asked - 1st grade is very young. I found the first time my girls played in the world championships- I’d say 85% of the top girls took Tae Kwan Do or some sort of similar discipline- for me it was a happy accident my kids did - but to earn the belts you aren’t fighting karate kid style - you have to learn to master forms - or specific body movements - which is a great way to learn the discipline to properly execute a good swing and rotation…
I’ve put my other suggestions on here such as breaking water balloons with golf clubs - and personally I’d steer as far away from group lessons - I think that ends more young golfers than it starts - if he’s serious - you need individual lessons with a good teacher - even just 30 minutes at a time or whatever …

Earl Woods would leave Tiger at the range while he was off banging chicks. Just keep that in the back of your mind.

Yep. Snag golf. Your teaching hard swing, hand eye contact and balance.

I started playing golf with several friends of mine whose daddy also played golf. Our mothers would drop us off in the morning with $5.00 and pick us up around noon. The money was enough to buy two RC's and a couple of moon pies. Each of us were either Jack Niclaus, Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead and so on. My point is he would have more fun hacking it around with friends and could become lifelong friends. We were probably 8 years old.

After some lessons get him signed up for a US Kids tourney. Set modest goals. My sons goal in his forst tourney was to avoid having to pick up, which is a 10 on a hole. He made a couple 9's but that was a successful round that made him want to come back.
Get started early. They have age groups for 6 and under. By the time they are 10 or 11, they are all pretty good so hacking around out there may be harder on the kid.

Do not force him into golf and do not be helicopter dad...Let him hack away and tell you if he continues

I agree - USKids is the best entry point IMHO - if they progress they very well grow out of the local tours by 11-13 but there are multiple options at that point. USKids is the best introductory golf tour out there - and combined with watching the short game (both the move and 1 season of the tv show) make getting to the worlds a real quest that is attainable for many…

The earlier they start the better possibility that they will achieve their full potential, what ever that might be. Get him lessons sooner than later. Golf is a sport for life.

He just needs a flat bill, a toe hang putter, and a white belt.
Talent and hard work are overrated.
If you look good, you feel good.
If you feel good, you’re relaxed.
If you are relaxed, you swing freely.
If you swing freely, you create speed.
If you create speed, you hit bombs.
