All of a sudden this summer I have gone from a decent bunker player to a mediocre one in not so pristine bunkers.

Would love to hear some thoughts on how Yall approach firm bunkers and and any videos you might suggest.

I usually use my 58 degree Vokey M grind.

Feel like you are digging the heel of the club into the ground.

Maybe.

Honestly I hit more thin that fat right now.

I've changed ball positions, stance, etc trying to figure it out.

Think of it as a tight lie. It’s still a bunker shot but just tighter. Use the bounce meets bunker shot. Accelerate!

That’s because you aren’t digging the heel into the sand enough. Narrower stance and a steeper angle into the ball. Heel should hit sand first and dig in!

Keep weight forward.
Square face
Thin bunkers are tough.

There is another technique where you open the face and lead with the heel end of club.

I try just nipping it out with a 52 degree. In firm/wet bunkers hitting mostly ball.

So the firmer the lie the less bounce is required. If it’s firm I’ll either go to my 54 but still will use my 58. I’m not opening the face cause as you open the face the more bounce you are adding and the more that club will bounce and you will hit thin shots. Try squaring the face and squatting and throw those hands down at that ball. Fast hands daddy!!

You should test all the wedges in this condition and find the one that fixes your problem

If it's really firm sand, I've been chipping it out just as I would if I were on the fringe around the green.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, I will try all of them.

Chappy, whenever you hit Houston again, we will play and you got a cold beer waiting for you.

Which technique worked best for you Bopper?

I vary between squaring up and almost chipping IF no lip and plenty of room versus leading with the heel when I’m short side and DEEP face.

Does anyone keep extra wedges with very little bounce and change them out depending on the venue, weather etc?

Ours got so thin that I ordered a 64 degree wedge. It worked, but I could not hit it 50 yards so I gave it to a friend who really liked it in the practice area because he could just square up and get it out of a thin bunker everytime.

Haven't had a chance to try anything yet.

We went over 3 months without rain and now we have had a week of it.

Hope to practice it next week.

Hit a little further behind the ball than you usually do and come in a lot steeper with some speed, and square face. It’s easier to do than a normal bunker shot, and you’ll get it quick

I’ll do it in completely compacted wet sand that you would never actually play out of and it pops right out
