Does anyone here ever play the “foursomes”(alternate shot) format?

On a regular basis?

My understanding is that at many clubs in the UK there is a day each week when foursomes is all you are allowed to play.

Do our junior or college players ever play foursomes?

At my club, we do it for our playoffs for tournaments. Several clubs in the UK, like Muirfield only allow foursomes in the morning hours and four ball in the afternoon.

I’ve done it for member member shootout, but I don’t think I’ve ever played it on like a weekday.

Is it just not part of US golf culture?

I don’t think I could talk anyone in to even trying it on a random Tuesday.

Our member member is 9 hole scramble, 9 alt shot, 9 four ball day 1 then 18 four ball day 2. Only day 2 is handicapped. This is Hattiesburg CC.

We joked about this the other morning. I don’t get to play as much as I’d like, so I feel like I’d rather hit all the shots I can on a routine round. I would gladly play if it was a tournament format

We have one tournament every year where we play a modified alternate shot. I forgot what the name of it is but both players tee off. You then pick the best shot and the player that did not hit that drive hits the second shot and with that one ball alternate the rest of the hole.

There used to be one of those here. I enjoyed it.

My daughter plays on 3 different Junior Tours. One of them has 3 alternate shot events a year. She and her partner are 2-0 with the third coming in November.

How did foursomes get locked into Ryder Cup?

Tradition?

How does the US team get better at foursomes?

Or is it just when the Europeans are hot they’re hot?

Glad to hear the future players are cutting their teeth on competitive foursomes a few times per year.

It may take a generation to catch-up.

If I had to guess, and this isn't based on any science or stats, I'd say American style golf leads to ineffective 4 somes. Distance at all costs leaving your partner in a bad situation or one that doesn't fit him. Or, I could be completely wrong.

The Europeans play on the same tour as the Americans. The days of clashing styles are over. They won in foursomes because they putted way better and because their captain played all the correct matchups from a data standpoint to give them every edge they could find.

Why did Keegan double down on ignoring analytics?

He played the worst possible odds with Morikawa/English (132 of 132 possible pairings).

Is he just that stubborn?

I respect that team Europe played at an extremely high level, but we buried our chances with poor choices.

When everything simmers down in a few weeks, I'd really like to get to the bottom of the whole odds and evens with Scheffler and Henley. Scottie made a comment that he and Ted ran it up the flag pole to Keegan that he and Henley should swap their tees from Friday to Saturday because he felt like they were at a disadvantage with distance on too many holes. That should have been obvious months ago. It shouldn't take a player and caddie to point out something that the analytics team should have known essentially when they were hired.

I find it kinda weird that they’re all so emotional playing for their continent, especially when most of them live in Florida.

Did it in our am tour ryder cup this past weekend. Been playing golf since I was 13 and this was the first time I'd ever done it. Was extremely fun.

I've mentioned to my brother in law that it would be a lot of fun to do it to get the teammate vibes going for the first time in years. The issue is with young kids, I only get so many chances to play golf. It's hard to justify using one of those to play half the shots.

It was a lot of fun and hope to do it again next year. But pretty sure outside of our event and practicing for it, I wouldn't play it on a regular day out at the course. Especially if you don't get to play as often as you want, like you say, you're playing half the amount of golf.
