I'm not a great golfer by any means. I shoot in the 90s, my best rounds of my life have been high 80s, and none of them have come in recent years. I shot a legit 91 a few weeks back and enjoyed the round.

Now, the clubs.

A decade ago I was hitting an improvement set, I forget the woods but they were Taylormade, and the irons were the Wilson staff Di9.

Several years ago I tossed those out and went with Nike VRS driver, 3w, and hybrid, and sold the staff irons off for the Ci9 irons for "more control". I feel like this has always been a mistake.

As someone who is lucky to shoot a 91, I don't need control, I need forgiveness.

I want to sell everything off and go back to a full on improvement set like I've never played before and enjoy it.

I also don't want to spend 1.5k.

Is there much downside to selling everything off and just getting the Callaway Edge set from Costco?

Any other recommendations?

Get a used set of clubs. Callaway pre-owned has a site you can pick up a good set for under a grand.

Since they’re certified the quality is probably going to be better than other places.

A series of lessons addressing specific areas may be very beneficial.

Where do you lose strokes?

Putting?
Chipping?
Sand play?
Pitching?

A sharp short game can help you turn a 91 into an 85.

Do you drive the ball OB?
Do you miss it both ways?
Learning how to deliver the driver can save you some shots.

What is your Miss with an iron?
Fat? Thin?
Hit balls with your feet together. This will train your body to turn.

Forget nonsense like “keep your head down.”
Developing a true swing or sling motion will lead to better strikes.
You are not “hitting” when you golf. You swing the club, the ball gets in the way.

Thin is better than fat. No equipment can help a fat shot.

Swaying is death.

That's fair, but I feel like I regressed when I changed my set to an improved set.

I'm not shaping shite. I'm playing bogey golf and drinking Dos Equis and I'm fine with that.

I want less clubs to pick from that are easier to hit.

Why do you need to shape anything? You can get to a + handicap hitting the ball straight.

I did this last year, replaced my entire bag except putter and a couple of wedges. Also allowed me to get rid of three sets of old irons via trade in. Got a set of Rogue ST Pro Irons that were 'like new' but were actually still shrink wrapped. Couldn't have been easier.

You can still buy new sets that are from a line of clubs that are 3 to 4 years old, Taylormade Sim2, Stealth, Ping 425,430 or Callaway Rogue that won't break the bank. You can find decent used sets of those clubs as well. Buy the irons that match the driver, they are the game improvement irons. If I were you, I'd get a Driver, 5W, 7W, 5-AW then depending on the loft of the AW get a 54,56 SW and a 58,60 LW. Don't buy used wedges, they normally are worn down and don't produce as much spin which you need around the greens, any of the name branded wedges are good.

Go to your local golf shop and find out what your clubhead speed is, this will tell you what shaft stiffness you need, they can also help you figure out what lie angle you need as well. You don't need to go and get fitted for custom clubs, sounds like you just want to have fun on the weekends with your friends and enjoy the day. Once you start playing better and can shoot in the 80's consistently, then go and get fitted, until then, you'd just be wasting yours and the fitters time trying to fit someone who can't produce a somewhat repeatable strike on the ball. If you're 5'7" to a little over 6', standard length clubs will most likely work unless you have T-Rex or gorilla length arms.

I’ve been intrigued by the Cleveland Zipcore XLs. I’ve loved the Zipcore wedges and someone who is not a good wedge player.

When I bought mine I went and swung every club that was in my budget. I had my heart set on Mizuno JPX 923. I tried them and couldn't hit them straight to save my life. I had told myself that I was not buying Callaway Mavriks. Well after hitting the Callaways I left with a set of 5-AW and a zipcore 60*. Now I have added the AI smoke 5w after doing the same process and that club being the most consistent of everyone that was in stock at Edwin Watts. I would definitely go hit on a simulator and see what works best for you in your budget so you don't have buyers regret in a month.

You can get a great set of clubs in the 0211 irons from PXG at a great price.

They also have full bag deals.

I’m a 35 handicap golfer (down from 42 a few weeks ago and continuing to drop) and just picked up some 101s. I love them. My iron game is already improved in a noticeable way. Im getting much better lift. I’m probably 5 or so strokes lower since switching over.

A lot probably has to do with getting regular length clubs. My older set was from eBay and longer than standard.

But I love the new Takomos. They’re an incredible value.
