Hey folks... need some advice on getting golf clubs for my son, who is 6’8”. He’s brand-new to golf and wants to start playing. My clubs are just too short. I’m only 5’8”. Before you ask... his mom (no pics) is 6’6”.

(Kidding... he’s my stepson)

Anyhow... is this a special order situation? Should I take him down to Edwin Watts? Anyone have experience outfitting a taller golfer and have advice?

Thank you in advance... you’ll be helping him have a very nice Christmas!

100%

once he learns to swing, he should be able to hit it a country mile.

Bring him to John Joy at LeTromphe in Broussard he's been fitting players of every size for over 40 years...he knows what he's doing for sure!

I’m 6’7”. I am not a pro or even a really good player, but just giving a couple of opinions from someone who has been down this road.

The club length in a lot of ways really will depend on your son’s arm length. If your son’s arms are long (39” sleeves or longer) he may be ok with standard length clubs. My sleeve length is 37” & I play 1” over standard shafts. Have him stand next to you with both of your arms by your sides & see where his hands are relative to yours. That will give you an idea of the length of shaft. Lie angles may be off, but if he is just starting out, that is not that big of a deal. Getting fitted may be an expense that you don’t want to incur until he decides he wants to play. I might consider lessons first for the money.

Warning for your son: there is A LOT that can go wrong with a 6’8” golf swing. BUT there is some real distance when all of that body length syncs up.

I’m going to have to disagree with you here. I’m a 5 handicap and have 2* upright on my irons. When I hit a standard lie iron, it’s bad bad. I have to really adjust my swing to hit them.

A lot will depend on arm length honestly. I am 6'4 and play standard lie and length clubs because I am long waisted and long arms.

It will be a custom length club for him for sure but most places should be able to do it in house. I would actually look for a good used set of clubs and reshaft them rather than buy him some brand new custom orders unless you go through someone like Hogan or Haywood online and save some money.

With the extra length, he might need them bent upright too though.

I understand & don’t disagree that lie angles are important to better contact & scores. But he’s just starting out, not a 5 handicap. That’s why I suggested lessons. A good teaching pro can work with him & then decide about a fitting. I don’t think that lie angles are as important as learning good mechanics, especially for someone that tall.

But if we’re trying to make this a great Christmas then I would get him fitted, buy a set of new clubs & get lessons.

Getting the overall weight and the swing weights right can be a real challenge.

I played 18 holes with Scottie Pippen 15 years ago at Greatwood where I live, his clubs were 2 inches long and he used the green Jumbo Victory grips with 7 wraps.

I tried to hit his 6 iron and it was a sledgehammer.

This is a good suggestion. The guy’s name is Nathan. He’s a good dude. Check him out.
