But you said they allow slope.

They are allowed. But the function has to be turned off:

Distance devices are allowed by default under the Rules of Golf. Slope, wind, and club-recommendation features are not. Tours and some club events can ban the devices entirely.

Since the 2019 rewrite, Rule 4.3a lets you use a laser, GPS watch, or phone app to get a yardage. Distance is treated as public information, the same as a number on a sprinkler head. A committee that wants them off adopts Model Local Rule G-5. If the notice to competitors or the scorecard says nothing, distance-only use is legal.

What the device may not do during the round:
• Slope or elevation-adjusted “plays like” yardages
• Measured wind, temperature, or other conditions that affect the shot
• Club recommendations or processed distances from this round
• Swing, setup, or alignment analysis
• Green-contour mapping used as a reading aid (tours also restrict this with Model Local Rule G-11)

Cheating? How so?

Rule 4.3 says you can't use equipment to "artificially eliminate or reduce the need for a skill or judgment that is essential to the challenge of the game."
The USGA/R&A specifically prohibit devices/apps that calculate or analyze things like wind, slope/elevation, temperature, humidity, or "effective playing distance." So using AI to factor those in and recommend a club or shot would likely be a Rules violation.

Arccos attempts to provide the same, personalized club selections. Many apps do. This is more tailored.

Also not allowed during official rounds if it’s doing more than just saying “it’s 155 yards, so hit your 9.” If it’s saying, “you normally hit your 9 155, but with this wind and temperature , you should hit your 8”, that’s not allowed.

I know most people do it.

If this is cheating, so is a range finder. Data is data.

A range finder is giving data, not advice. It’s similar to not being allowed to use the slope function during a competition.

Depends what the rule sheet says. Most say USGA and R&A govern all play except for the following local rules.

They can add slope to the local rule. If that rule is not there, you cannot use it.

Advice Prohibition: Under the Rules of Golf (Rule 10.3a), players cannot ask for or receive advice—defined as any counsel or suggestion that could influence a player in determining their play, choice of club, or method of making a stroke. Using AI tools that act as a digital caddie for club selection, green reading, or shot strategy during a round violates this rul

If you're wanting to play by USGA rules, then you can't use in round advice wit AI. It's the same as asking your playing partner/competitor for advice.

Whether someone wants to play by the rules is a different story. The Golfweek Am Tour events I play in are very strict and even my MGA events at the club say to turn off slope on your rangefinder. Using AI would be taking it quite a bit further than slope on a rangefinder.

Official tournaments, of course. USGA rules and they’re enforced. Your weekly money game where you’ve got slope on, you play it up and down, etc. I wouldn’t consider help with a bot cheating. That’s all I was saying.

That’s up to whoever is playing that round, but I don’t think it’s fair to compare rangefinder slope with some custom AI golf bot.

It’s a virtual caddie. Pretty cool shite. But to compare it to kicking a ball back in bounds is a little much.

Sorry, but if it’s crunching numbers on temperature, wind, etc, it’s a lot more advanced than slope on a rangefinder. Which is pretty pointless in Louisiana anyway, in my opinion.

Sorry, but the Bushnell range finder does those things too when you turn on slope with the latest and greatest. Mine is 4 years old and can take into account weather. If we played together on a random Sunday game, and I used it, am I a cheater to you? We are talking about degrees of the same thing.

Fair enough. I’m not sure where the line should be drawn for small money games like you’re describing.
