Have you ever had a driver make a huge difference in your game?

I have been playing off and on for years and mostly on since the beginning of the year. My driver has always been my weakest link in my bag and the word inconsistent springs to mind.

In July while in Colorado I rented some clubs and I hit them significantly better than my old irons and especially the driver. I hit 11 fairways that day and carried it longer than my usual driver. I chalked it up to altitude mostly and didn't think much of it until I played with someone yesterday who had the same driver.

I hit 2 shots from 2 tee boxes with one from mine and one from his and each time I hit his driver straighter or slight draw and carried it 20-30 yards longer.

Yes. Longer and straighter in the game of golf can make a difference. More news at 10.

You should reach out to MileHighDraw for a lesson the next time you’re in the mountains.

If you haven't upgraded your driver in a while, modern drivers are insanely forgiving with mishits.

I think it can at either end of the talent/skill spectrum but not so much between. I really bad golfer can benefit by using a really good quality driver as opposed to a piece of crap. A really good golfer might shave off a couple strokes by using a driver that is better tuned to his abilities. In between, it likely helps temporarily mainly due to the confidence and mental aspect, but it won't consistently change you from a high 80s/90s player to a single digit handicap.

Guy in my golf group upgraded from R11 to M6 this year.

Legit has gained about 80-100 yards off the tee.

Big guy who we could never understand why his distance was so bad, now he's one of the longer hitters.

Without a doubt.

I love my SIM’s, and they have definitely made a difference in my game.

I beat ell’s arse a couple weeks ago with them!

I was playing with a senior flex titleist driver when I first started because it was just sitting in someone’s garage. I was very inconsistent with it.

Did the dumb move of getting a new driver without being fitted. I’m hitting bombs (relatively) now and probably 12/18 drives are in the fairway or first cut. Ping G410 plus with a stiff Ping tour 65 shaft. I’ve always had a lower ball flight because I play the ball farther back in my stance than most, but this driver still gets a really good piercing flight with a lot of rollout. Drove two greens last Saturday that are 300+ and I’m not a big strong dude by any means.

The biggest part though is keeping the ball in play, which I’m able to do at a much higher rate. Some of that is surely due to me playing more and developing a better swing, but even my heel and toe hits tend to go a lot straighter and farther now. I think if I went and got fitted for a driver I would end up with exactly what I’m gaming. It was dumb to not get fitted but I lucked out

I got the LST and man that thing is hot. My favorite club in the bag by far.

Mine too. I’ve gotten pretty good off the tee and really good at chipping

The bad news is I’ve gotten really good at chipping because I’m really bad at hitting greens in regulation, so I chip a lot

Would need to know a lot about your golf game, your current driver, etc. to give an answer.

12/14, 4 par 3s on most courses. Hitting 86% of fairways will definitely improve your scores.

You can’t think about driver versus driver. You have to think about tee shot versus tee shot. If I got fitted and found a driver that I could hit 275 and in the fairway 75% of the time I would have to compare it to my normal tee shot which is usually a 200 yard 4 iron on most par 4s or a 275ish driver in the rough and behind trouble.

This would make a huge difference in my game as I would go from a 7 iron into most par 4s to hitting wedges and I am an above average to excellent wedge player. I could trim a lot shots with hitting fairways with a driver.

Drivers break down to this.
These days, all the modern heads are basically the same. It’s mostly personal preference.

Most of a Drivers performance comes from the shaft.

Get fitted for a really good shaft.

And yes, Drivers can make a difference. Chicks dig the long ball.
