I'm sure it's people being home from work, combined with great weather, combined with free golf, but that's the most packed I've seen some of these courses in years.

Played yesterday. Greens are dry and covered in ball mark craters. Incredibly crowded, too. Mowers are out this morning after little or no maintenance the past few days.

Just catching up on this thread. Is Santa Maria still open to walk for free? Anybody played during the week? Is it overly crowded? Thx

Santa was as crowded as I have ever seen it last Friday afternoon.

Figured a Friday would be. I’m “working” from home for the foreseeable future. Middle of week might not be so bad.

Two weeks ago after the official closure, it was fine. Mostly just SM residents playing, singles and twos. Word obviously got around this past week. Now it’s a steady stream of very slow 5-somes. We’re getting a lot more errant balls in our yard. My guess is that there are a lot of first-time high-handicappers out there who are unfamiliar with the course.

Santa Maria is getting borderline out of control in the afternoons. The LSU crowd has found a new temporary home at Santa Maria.

I saw a group of six try and jump on number 10 in front of people walking off of the number 9 green.

I told my regular afternoon playing partner that we will have to figure something else out until quarantine is over because SM is getting to crowded and out of control with people jumping on anywhere and everywhere.

I rode up there around 3 this afternoon and it was crowded as hell, so I said "frick it" and drove to Webb and played pretty much without delay. There were people lined up at the 1st tee waiting to play, and I think I saw the same thing you did in regards to the people trying to start on 10.

I played late Saturday around 3 and had little problem.

Want to play there again...may try to go earlier tomorrow, like around noon or 1

I quit after 12 at Webb this evening because I couldn’t handle the effing gnats any more.

I noticed them too. Been like that the last couple of times I've played there, but almost exclusively on the back 9.

Could it be from the old decayed trees that they have cut down?

I played Santa Maria on Tuesday at 9:00 and it wasn’t bad at all. I was a single and started on 10 which was completely clear. By the time I started the front all the big groups were just starting the back so the front was pretty clear.

I played there Sunday as well, and they were around a good bit on the back nine. But yesterday at Webb was far worse. Could be the time of day though.

A couple of years ago I bought some spray from a company called Buggins that works great for gnats and biting flies. They also sell one for mosquitos that's very effective.
