Better decision making
How do you decide which shot to hit when out of position?

I made 2 poor decisions yesterday that sort of blew up on me.

My thoughts on reflection:
1. Get back to the golf course?
2. Is the lie good enough to try a more difficult shot?
3. Does this bring more trouble into play?
4. Can I find a way to get a wedge in my hand for next shot?
5. What shot will allow for a par putt attempt 80% of the time?

Other things to weigh?

1. How is my lie
2. What is my club selection
3. what is my miss that particular day

Mostly just focus on getting the ball on the green from a bad lie not worried about distance from the pin

How good of a player are you? Ultimately you’re going to have to accept bogey as a good score when in trouble and move on. That’s probably the best thing I’ve learned. Handicap has gone down quick since realizing I’m not a pro and understanding what shots I can or can’t hit

I think about what is the worst case scenario and what is the most likely outcome.

re: Better decision making
Only one word of advice you need to know and stick with when in a tough situation is to make bogey your worst score. My cousin taught me this when I was trying to qualify for the Mid Am Championship in Louisiana. Would shoot in the mid 80's because of a few holes I blew up on trying to hit the great shot out of trouble. Got my score to the upper 70's when I would punch out and two putt for bogey. Shot a 40 on the front at the Bluffs and needed to shoot under 40 to qualify on the back nine. Hit it in the rough on 10, 11, and 12 and just punched out a made bogey on all three and then parred out to shoot 39, 79 total, and made the cut by 2.

If in doubt, just cut your losses whichever way you can.

re: Better decision making
Growing up I hit driver all ove the map so I got pretty good at hitting from the shite. I mostly just do a risk reward. What’s best and worst case scenario from this spot. What’s the most likely. Does that give my a legit advantage to make par? Is there a chance to get it in way more trouble? My suggestion is that if you are going to play the risky shot you have to do it will 100% confidence. Fully commit. If not you probably going to hit a bad shot

One question and one question only:

What's the best play for the easiest bogey?

You'll find sometimes you will save par more often than making double.

11 index now.
As low as 7.5 in last year.
Had heart surgery a few months back.
Trying to find swing again, but my bad holes yesterday were poor planning mostly.

Only one thing to decide-

Where can I realistically hit the ball that will make my next shot as easy as possible?

It’s simple.

I was scoring well and let that make me think I could “do” something from a couple of bad positions.

I need to remind myself that I’m the man who hit it over to the crap off of the tee. Maybe I should punch back into play and try to make a solid bogey.

Part of this is being honest with yourself on your ability, but at the core of it for me is "where will my miss be?"

If the answer is in jail again, maybe worse, then I punch it out. If I know I can at least be green side and no water is in play and at worse I just have a bunker shot, then I'm going for it.

I doubled 4 in a row on the front on Saturday and it was entirely because my gappings were 10-15 yards off

re: Better decision making
Bad execution on a tee shot sometimes leads me to a bad decision on recovery.

I just need to stop compounding the error by simplifying everything down to “get back to the golf course and have a good chance to make a bogey.”

I think one issue is I grew up playing relatively easy munis and now I play a 138 slope with a 72.6 rating from my tee.

On the old courses, often one great shot could get you back to par. Now it often takes 2 great shots to overcome a mistake.

Maybe I should find a new, easier golf course.
