A bit of a dust-up at the golfing range

Weekend during the day at City Park. Hot, and when I arrived not very crowded. I grabbed one of the rubber tees that fit my driver height and proceeded to warm up and get loose. I'm an older guy so I take my time loosening up.
When practicing I start with wedges and proceed to driver, then finish up with lob wedge. Sometimes I don't hit many irons as to save energy for the driver. Sometimes I don't hit the irons well and work out the issues while hitting more balls with the irons.
A guy arrives and takes the stall in front of me. He appears to be my age. He sees my rubber tee and asks "Hey, are you using that tee?"
"Yes, sir". There are others in the stalls"
"No, they're arn't. Not that size."
I shrug and proceed to practice. He turns around after a minute. "Seems stupid to just let it lay there without use. Tell you what. I'll use it and you can ask me when for it when you need it."
"No sir. I don't know when I'll be ready to hit my driver." I'm getting pissed at his dickish behavior and body language. Dude, there's grass out there and I'm sure you have tees in your bag. Why not ask the guys at the desk for a scissors to cut off a long rubber tee?
I ended up hitting my driver, removed the tee, and threw it over to him. He still had balls to hit. He picked it up and threw it back.
I laughed in his face.

Sounds more like you're a 4 year old who still hasn't mastered sharing and being a decent person.

When you were ready all you had to do was ask, really not a big deal

So you could have let him use it then got it back the moment you needed it?

To be honest.... you sound like a dick.

This is precisely why we cannot have nice things.

I don't know. As I said, I did not know when I would need it. It may be as little as 5 balls after I gave it up. Talking about being a dick. The guy did not lift a finger to find another solution and I told him I would let him use it when I finished.

Exactly why so many people don't get involved with memberships at clubs or with golf in general.

This is exactly why I do belong to a club. So I can go to the end of the range and beat range balls in private

What do you mean you don’t know?
That was the exact stipulation he gave you.

So you got to the range first. You got the tee you wanted. The other guy had plenty of other options, but the board thinks you’re a dick for not giving the guy your tee?

If he’s not using it at the time, why not let him have it? When he’s ready to hit driver, ask for it. Seems pretty simple.

Back to OP, I wouldn't let the guy have my tee either.
Too many times on the range I get a feeling from a swing and immediately want to apply that to another club, often a driver. So I really never know when I may want to peg one up and hit the driver.
The other guy is more than welcome to that tee once I'm gone.
ETA: I can't imagine 1 rubber driving mat tee is that special, though. I carry those shorty tees when hitting off of mats so I can just stick one in the mat

I didn't know WHEN I needed it. It could have been 5 balls, 10, or 20. Don't you think I would have been a dick if I said "I need it" after he lifted the mat, installed the peg, and hit 2 balls?

You old timers need to chill the f*** out on the golf course and realize you don’t have anymore ownership over it than anyone off the street.
Y’all are the ones killing the game.

If I was just warming up before play, then sure, take the tee. But if I'm working on something at the range then I want the tee when I want the tee.

Some golfers absolutely have ownership of the course they're playing. Some have more ownership than the people they are playing with. All depends on the membership structure of the club/course

Apply that thinking to anything else in life and it sounds stupid

Are you trolling or exhibiting spectrum behavior? The guy was as old as I if not older. He was the one being a dick. He was the one not looking for other options. He was the one not accepting my practice routine in lieu of his own. He was the one not accepting my solution of using the tee when I finished my practice. He was the one needing to chill.

My club provides plenty of tees for all members.
