I was recently walking through Target with my three year old and 1 1/2 year old. I walked past the electronics and saw the Switch display sitting there. I looked at my three year old and thought it would be fun one day to play games with him. It got me thinking on what is an appropriate age to introduce video games to kids. The only video gaming my three year old is the occasional joystick-point-the-airplane-straight-into-the-ground thing while I'm playing Flight Sim. I do almost all of my gaming after they go to bed, so they don't really have any concept of video games.

So my question: What have y'all done at what age?

There are age-appropriate games for all ages.

It's all about limiting their screen time.

For what it’s worth, I tried to get my 6 year old cousin to play Ratchet and she immediately got frustrated since she had never played anything before and she couldn’t even walk or jump. They need something ridiculously simple starting out.

Find an NES and start them on Mario like the real OGs did.

I downloaded the old Sunset Riders game on the Playstation store to play with my 5 year old. I could run around shooting stuff while she screwed around and learned how to make things move and shoot.

We have the new Ninja Turtles game now and she has a lot better understanding of the controls and can actually contribute a bit. Going to move on to Mario 3 and then Mario 64 next.

Very true.

Maybe I'm just trying to justify getting a switch

When I was 3 I opened a wood-paneled cabinet under our 200lb tube TV and discovered a birthday gift my dad had stuffed away nearly a decade prior: an NES box set with Mario/Duck Hunt complete with two controllers and light gun.

Even though I just finished Elden Ring on the beast that is the PS5, nothing will ever top the magic of my first journey through the Mushroom Kingdom on that little rectangular game pad. Which I’ve kept with me all these years and still use today with a USB adaptor.

I was still playing that NES I found well into 1998. I still remember the SNES Christmas.

I started my girls off with simple multiplayer side scrollers beat em ups like Ninja Turtles and Double Dragon and twin stick shooters like Smash TV and Geometry Wars. They were around 3-4 and got the hang of it pretty fast. Now they are 8 and 10 and mostly just play Mincraft, Roblox, and Fortnight b/c thats what their friends play.

My kids are 6 (7 in July) And 4. They like playing Mario Cart and Super Smash bros.

I played through all 9 Lego Star Wars games with my son when he was 6 or 7. It took a long time to finish but it was fun. That was a game two people could play at the same time.
