Xbox Series X purchase - $500 budget for accessories question.

Background - 53 year old here - buying a new Xbox Series X console. I'm at the mercy of this board to get some suggestions as to what I should purchase for accessories (good headset, good controllers, game software subscriptions, etc...) to accompany this console. Just looking to start a new pastime, interested in gaming from much earlier years of enjoyment doing this, starting to have more free time but am limited to restrictive physical activities due to ongoing health issues, etc... Looking to play games such as Call of Duty and similar. Again, please dumb it down for me as I'm basically new to this current "high quality" gaming environment. If you only had $500 to get some accessories, what would be some "must-have, useful" items you all would suggest to purchase? Thanks for any info - just looking to maximize my dollars with this new venture.

Do you already have the console? Cause thats the $500 budget there if lucky.
Aside from that, a 4k tv with 240hz refresh rate

I don’t know how much you know of game pass but since you mentioned a subscription you’ll get the best value by doing the following before you ever sign up for game pass.
But 3 prepaid 12 month Xbox live gold cards from Costco or somewhere similar.
Add the cards to your account turning off auto renew
Buy a month of game pass ultimate
Then you’ll get 3 years of game pass ultimate for around 150 bucks. (normally a 15 dollar/month price) More games than you’ll ever play. You won’t ever see games like COD but you’d be impressed what comes on there.
With the rest of the money you could buy an extra controller or a nice headset...it would be hard to spend 500 unless you really went for top of the line stuff (elite controller, steel series 9 headset)

I'm not sure how much you game but something to consider is storage space on the new consoles is fairly limited relative to the size of new games nowadays. You have about 800 GB of usable space in the Series X. You can store any game and play backwards compatible games on many inexpensive hard drives but to play Series X games or Series X enhanced backwards compatible games you will need Microsoft's proprietary drive. Those cost $220.00 for 1TB.

I’m actually in market for an x as well.
How do you get 3 years of game pass from buying one month? Sorry if it’s a stupid question. Haven’t had an Xbox since the 360.

Xbox offers the ability to convert Xbox Live to Game Pass Ultimate for $1: LINK
The cheapest way to do that is to buy 3 years of Xbox Live from a place like Costco, redeem them, and then do the conversion.

Oh damn! Thanks for the explanation man.

Np! Just sucks that you can only stack 3 years of it, instead of unlimited stacking with PS+

Maybe you can show us where PS+ is letting you get 100s of games for a $1 conversion??? Please enjoy your unlimited PS+ and 2 games a month

I agree the $1 conversion is a good deal, but it can only be done once. However, PS Now stacks, and combined with PS+, is cheaper than GPU. So back to my original point...it'd be nice if GPU could stack beyond 3 years, regardless of the $1 conversion deal.

Recap for here
1. XLive/Gamepass conversion - $150
2. Headset (Dolby Atmos/Wireless) - $130
3. External Storage - $100
4. 2nd Controller - $55
5. Xbox remote - $20
6. Xbox controller battery pack - $20
Total $475
All those numbers are fluid though. You can get less GamePass. The headset price is for a Rig 800, can be cheaper or much more expensive with other models or brands. Storage can go up or down as well with total TB or with SSD. Personally I would get the cheap $50 external HD. 2TB would be plenty and you can move the games back and forth between the internal and external. Your most used games stay in internal. 2nd controller if you have friends that visit. You are going to want the rechargeable battery pack and lastly get the remote if you are going to use your XBox for streaming.

Ah, I see. $120/year for the PSNow+ and $180/year GPU. So that is correct for people ignoring deals or coming to end of conversion
However for newbies.
Xbox Game Pass - 3 years - $150
PSNow+ - 3 years - $360
PSNow+ will be a better deal starting in year 5 of ownership over GPU for new people.
This is of course removing which console you prefer.

I prefer rechargeable AA's instead of the battery packs

I agree with the 1TB of extra space
Posted on 3/29/21 at 1:23 pm to Cailloue Pitre
The 1TB of extra space really depends on how you game.
Personally, I never play more than 2 maybe 3 games at a time. So space is never really an issue for me.
Also have fast internet so it's not really a big deal for me to re-download something if I want to.

I would use caution though and snag extra storage. The Series X/PS5 games are only going to get larger. COD is over 130GB alone now. Flight Sim when releases on Xbox will probably be around the 150GB size. RDR2 was near 100GB.
Seems like these consoles should really start shipping with 2TB, maybe when they hit their v2 versions

upgrade your controller to the elite controller..it makes the world of difference. Buy is from costco though so if you ever have any issues you can return it.
