With Eiji Aonuma retiring in 10 years, does Zelda series decline? Other notes.

I know it's kind of Germans, but what do you think? An article came out about a week or two ago where he stated that in the 10 years he has left, he wants to slightly shift his focus to other things. He'll still keep his main focus as Zelda for this upcoming decade, though. If you're not particularly familiar with him, he has been the director of all the 3D Zelda games since the GOAT, Ocarina of Time.Shigeru and Eiji have pretty much been Mike Jordan/Scottie Pippin of the gaming universe since the late 90s so I believe it would be a bit sad to not see such a good tandem working on the same series again.
Other notes:
- Koji Kondo will NOT be working the Zelda U soundtrack. He's most famous for the well known Zelda themes such as the actual theme itself, Song of Storms and Time, etc.
- Hyrule Warriors next DLC actually lets you play as the Demon King Ganon (Pig form) in a destroy everything in sight mode. Available for roughly 3 bucks on eShop to those who are interested.
- Outside of one instance in Skyward Sword vs. Ghirahim and Demise, time hasn't factored into the series for 17 years. Eiji Aonuma hinted it may return in the near future. Of course, he slightly inferred it would be based on fan demand (as well as other games time nonwithsdanding).
- Limited Edition amiibos will be released sometime in the future. If I remember correctly, they'll be gold/silver skinned. May be a bit off on that. Might wanna double check that for any error.
- And one last one, the size of Zelda U will be as large as the system will allow, which means I would think that is either HUGE or underwhelming depending on the actual power and memory capacity of the Wii U.
So yeah.
Will link article explaining the interview with Eiji if requested.

I was looking at his career and you can argue the series dipped down when he took over actually. His first title really in charge was Majoras Mask which was very different but good. After that is when people started complaining about all the games. People are split on Wind Waker, twilight Princess, and Skyward sword. I think Link between worlds is awesome and would actually like to see them do something like that again. Maybe do a spiritual successor to Zelda 2? It's just a thought. I liked all those except for Skyward Sword which I didn't play. The formula certainly shifted once he took over.

I have no worries. Nintendo does an excellent job of seeding and developing talent. I expect the series to change, but Zelda is bigger than one guy, honestly.

Skyward Sword, Wind Waker, and Link Between Worlds are 3 of my top 4 games in the series. But he isn't the only person to make a good Zelda game, and not all of his have been as great as those 3. It isn't like the series will be worthless without him, but I'll definitely be sad to see him go.

I get the last 2, but Skyward Sword?

They just released the game most defined for it.

I was talking about regardless of remakes. Individual different games.

I don't think it will necessarily decline but I think it will change. Like Freauxzen said, Nintendo is good at finding and developing talent so I'm not too worried about quality. I just hope the series changes enough. I don't think they should abandon the Zelda formula entirely, but I do like when they toy with it, as they did with A Link Between Worlds. I'm REALLY curious to see what becomes of Zelda Wii U and how much they deviate.
I've never found the open environments of the 3D Zelda games to be particularly interesting, so a Zelda game boasting that as a major feature has me a little concerned, but hopeful.

Yes it needs to be open but filled with something.

I don't think it will drop in quality, at least not very much. It will be different though, and who knows, change can be a good thing. I guess we shall see. If there was a significant drop in the quality, though, I would be quite upset.
Oh, and the world being the biggest the Wii U is capable of pretty much can't be true, seeing as how Xenoblade Chronicles X is definitely going to be much, much bigger than Zelda. They're saying it's 5x bigger than the first one which was massive, so yeah.

quote:I agree. It looks beautiful in the videos, but if it's as light on interesting things to do as Wind Waker's ocean or Twilight Princess's Hyrule field, I won't care how gorgeous the visuals are (after I've played for a few hours, anyway).

Why would they lie to their own customers about something they lnow to be true?

I'm confident it won't crash and burn like Halo simply because 343 isn't involved.
I definitely think the series needs some new life though. Link Between Worlds was great and a good start. Hopefully the Zelda Wii U title will continue that kind of innovation and experimentation.
I'd also like to see the series expand on some of the background and history of the worlds Link is in. I can understand Zelda needing a least an appearance but Gannon doesn't need to always be in the game and the conflict doesn't always have to center around the Triforce. Expand the world/worlds Link is in and you can move away from the rehashed fight for the Triforce with Zelda and Gannon.

I know it isn't a popular opinion, but I just really loved SS. I definitely see the faults in it and can understand why someone may not enjoy it as much. But I just have so much fun swinging that remote around
Definitely one of my favorites, not necessarily one of "the best" if we are looking at it objectively. I still don't think it's as bad as everyone seems to think it is, though.

I thought it was already declining because of his works? The originals and OoT were the best, since then it's been average or above average, but nothing exceptional like Ocarina of time. He brought new ideas to the table in OoT and then just kept rolling them over after that

Which is actually kind of funny considering that the decline is only acknowledged by the hardcore fans.
Games like Twilight Princess received an almost unanimous 10 across the board to the overall audience, and any other review never dropped it below a 9.5.
The game is loathed amongst most of the long time fans though for its rehashing of content and similarity to the ocarina of time.
Decline is relative I suppose

I feel like every Zelda game catches a ton of hate from the "hardcore" fans and then like 5-10 years later its suddenly one of everyone's favorite in the series.
Look at Wind Waker for example.

Majora's Mask is in that category too. I feel like if they do an HD Wii U version of Twilight then it will be in that category.

Wind Waker is different though because Nintendo began by putting out badass pictures of Gannon and Link in a style similar to OoT and MM and then went with the cartoon style.
I refused to play the game for a long time because of the drastic change and disappointment. If Nintendo doesn't begin by saying the game would look like OoT and MM then I think Wind Waker would have been received better.

As much fun as wind waker was, and I put it tied for 3rd as my favorite, I'll take riding endlessly on a horse over riding on a stupid sail boat 11 times out of 10.
