PS4 is up to 113 million units. More than double the Xbox One.
And it got there faster than the PS2 did.
The PS5 has been said to out pace the PS4s launch by a lot.
The question shouldn't really be why was the PS2 so popular, but why was the PS3 such a let down in comparison. (still did well)

Comparing direct numbers decades apart is sort of unfair because the gaming market has grown by so much.
Just as an example the original NES sold about 62 million units but I would say it along with the PS2 are the most successful gaming consoles all time. They both achieved as close to 100% market penetration as any console ever has. The NES and the PS2 are the only consoles that pretty much every single person I ever knew who was remotely into gaming always owned.
The number of people purchasing and playing video games in 2020 is so much higher than it was 20 years ago and way, way, way higher than it was in the 80's.
I remember in the 90's when a game selling a million copies was considered this huge monumental achievement, nowadays a hyped game can move 3-4 million and be considered a massive failure because they were expecting at least 10.
Way too expensive at launch and too big of a delay before system moving PS3 exclusive games started showing up. It was notoriously difficult to develop for, had a very proprietary architecture which resulted in games taking a lot longer at first. I think Sony was so high of the success of the PS2 they thought everyone would just buy the PS3 no matter what so they didn't think about the competition enough.

The WII was also selling at a ridiculous pace thanks to the price and motion gimmick

It was a DVD player when DVD players were north of 700 dollars.

Ya Wii sold like crazy because it crossed over into the toy market. Kids and parents who knew nothing of video games knew of it and wanted it. I saw a youtube video/interivew of a guy who worked in a game store at the time the Wii came out and he was reminiscing about all the soccer moms who came in for months and asked to buy "the bowling game" and they were talking about the Wii.

This
I worked at Best Buy for both the ps2 and Xbox launches. PS2 beat them to the punch by a year. We pushed the frick out of PS2 as a DVD player and it worked. People bought the hell out of them for just that reason. Hell it was my first DVD player. This was the beginning of the mass conversion from VHS to DVD. No one knew what Halo was at first. Obviously that changed with Xbox 360 vs PS3.

The PS2 era is when a lot of gamers realized they had outgrown Nintendo, myself included.
That's an interesting point. I never even played on a gamecube. It was the first Nintendo I didn't give a shite about.
PS2 was just amazing. Metal Gear Solid was just an entirely new experience like the other poster said. Mario 64 was amazing when it came out, but then MGS added realism, at least somewhat, to games.
And NCAA was king at the time.
Also add to that that the PS2 was easily hacked and then the options were endless.

What’s really interesting is how the gamecube was actually the most powerful console with the best graphics
More power than the XBOX?

Biggest reasons the PS3 was such a letdown? Mainly in that it was a Trojan horse for Blu Ray first and a system second.
360 was owning that whole generation and I seem to recall that PS3 had problems getting titles released to begin with, then some of those ports from other platforms were disasters, such as Orange Box by Valve.
